Crochet A 5 Star Beanie

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

• Caron® Simply Soft® Taupe (1 ball)
• Bernat® Faux Fur Pompom Grey Lynx (1 Pompom)
• Sizes U.S. H/8 (5 mm) and U.S. I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hooks or size needed to obtain gauge

SIZE: One size to fit average woman.
GAUGE: 12 sc and 13 rows = 4" with larger hook. 7 star clusters and 14 rows = 4" with larger hook.

DIRECTIONS:

Ribbing: With smaller hook ch 13.
1st row: (RS). Working in back loops only, 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sl st in each ch to end of chain. Turn. 12 sl sts. 2nd row: Ch 1. Working in back loops only, 1 sl st in each of next 12 sl sts. Turn. Rep 2nd row until work from beg measures 18, ending on a WS row. Do not fasten off.
Join back seam: Working in back loops only, sl st last row and rem loops of foundation ch tog. Do not fasten off. Turn work, change to larger hook and beg working in rnds as follows:

1st rnd: Ch 1. Work 71 sc evenly around. Join with sl st to first sc. 71 sc.
2nd rnd: Ch 3. Draw up a loop in each of the following sps: 2nd and 3rd loops from hook, same sc as last sl st and each of next 2 sc. Yoh and draw through all 6 loops on hook - beg Star Cluster made. Ch 1. *Draw up a loop in each of the following sps: Top of previous Star Cluster, under 2 vertical strands of last st of previous Star Cluster, in same sp as last loop drawn up of previous Star Cluster and each of next 2 sc. Yoh and draw through all 6 loops on hook -Star Cluster made. Ch 1. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch-3. 35 Star Clusters.
3rd rnd: Ch 1. *1 sc in first ch-1 sp. 1 sc in top of next Star Cluster. Rep from * around, ending with 1 sc in last ch-1 sp. Join with sl st to first sc. 71 sc. Rep last 2 rnds until work from beg (including ribbing) measures approx 6?", ending on a 2nd rnd.
Dec for crown as follows:
1st rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in first st. *Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 5 sts. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 61 sts.
2nd and alt rnds: Ch 3. Beg Star Cluster. Ch 1. *Star Cluster. Ch 1. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch-3.
3rd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in first st. *Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 4 sts. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 51 sts.
5th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in first st. *Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 3 sts. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 41 sts.
7th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in first st. *Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 2 sts. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 31 sts
9th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in first st. *Sc2tog. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 21 sts.
10th rnd: Ch 1. *Sc3tog. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 7 sts. Fasten off, leaving a long end. Draw end through rem sts and fasten securely.
Sew Faux Fur Pompom to top of Hat.
