SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 2 or 3 balls of Weight Category 4 Yarn - 100% Acrylic
  • US H Crochet Hook

DIRECTIONS:

GAUGE: Granny square should be 4" wide. If yours is slightly bigger or slightly smaller it is not of too much concern as this vest is not meant to be fitted.
Quadruple Treble Stitch (Qtr): Yarn over the hook 3 times. Insert the crochet hook into the stitch you wish to work. Yarn over and pull through the stitch; there will be five loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops, leaving four loops on the hook. Continue to yarn over and pull through fist 2 loops until 2 loops remain on the hook. Yarn over and pull through both loops. One Qtr created.

FRONT:
Square 1:
W US H hook, ch 6, join with slip stitch in first ch.
Round 1: Ch 3, dc 2 in the created loop. (Ch 3, 3dc in hole) 3 times, Ch 3, join with slip stitch in 3rd chain of the foundation chain.
First Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in the ch 3corner space. (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in next corner space) 3 times, join with a slip stitch in the 3rd chain of the foundation chain. Fasten off and break yarn.
For the Small/Medium, you will create two strips of 2 connected squares. For the Large/XL you will create two strips of 3 squares. You can sew them together, or join as you go using the following Row 2.
Subsequent Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in the ch 3 corner space. 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in next corner space. 3 dc into next corner space, ch 1, slip stitch into any corner space of the other square. Ch 1, 3 dc into the corner space of the square you are working on. Slip sitch in the middle space between the corners of the first square. 3 dc into next corner space of the square you are working on. Ch 1, slip stitch into the next corner space of the first square. Ch 1, 3 dc into the same corner space you are working on. Join with slip stitch in ch 3 of the foundation chain. Break yarn.
Join yarn in the corner space of your granny square strip. Sc 1 in same corner. Working across the long edge, sc in each dc of the granny squares, working 2 sc into each corner space of the two squares facing each other. Finish with a sc in the corner space. You should have a multiple of 3 +1. If not, adjust accordingly.

STITCH PATTERN:
Row 1: Ch 6. (This counts as your first Qtr, plus 1) Qtr in next sc. *Ch 1, skip next sc, 1 Qtr in next stitch.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc 1 in same stitch. Work on sc in each stitch and ch1 space across, finishing with a sc in the 5th of the foundation chain of the row below.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 twice more.
Shaping row: Ch 3, skip first sc, dc into next sc. This counts as a dc2tog. Dc into each sc until last 2 stitches, dc2tog.
Repeat shaping row 3 times more.
Ch 1, sc into first dc and each dc of previous row. Fasten off.

BACK:
Ch 38 (44) , sc into 2nd chain from hook, sc across. 37 (43) sc.
Row 1: Ch 6. (This counts as your first Qtr.) Qtr in next sc. *Ch 1, skip next sc, 1 Qtr in next stitch.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc 1 in same stitch. Work on sc in each stitch and ch1 space across, finishing with a sc in the 5th of the foundation chain of the row below.
Repeat the last 2 rows 3 (4) times more.
Shaping row: Ch 3, skip first sc, dc into next sc. This counts as a dc2tog. Dc into each sc until last 2 stitches, dc2tog.
Repeat the last row 2 times more.
Work 2 rows of plain dc.
Fasten off.

FINISHING:
With right side facing, sew shoulder seams.
Sew side seams only on granny square section. The arm holes are long by design.

BOTTOM BORDER:
With right side facing, beginning at the bottom edge of the left front, *join yarn in the corner space of the granny square strip. Sc 1 in same corner. Working across the long edge, sc in each dc of the granny squares, working 3 sc into the space where the two squares face each other. Finish with a sc in the corner space.* Sc across the back panel and repeat from * to *. Fasten off.
Create fringe by wrapping remaining yarn around a book. The larger the book the longer the fringes will be. Cut all strands together.
Hold 3 strands together, fold in half and attatch with a larks head knot to the front corner edge. Create groups of evenly spaced fringe knots roughly every 3 stitches across entire hem.
