Intermediate Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Big Twist™ Yarn Supplies:
    • Olive Drab: 1 Skein
    • Hot Pink: 1 Skein
    • Watermelon: 1 Skein
  • Crochet Hook: Size 6
  • Floral Wire
  • Wire Cutters
  • Scissors

DIRECTIONS:

The project is created by crocheting individual branches around folded lengths of wire and adding flowers to the ends, and tying the branches together at the base as they are created.
Folding floral wire a few times holds the shape of the stems, especially those with flowers.
To begin a branch, cut a length of wire that is 64" long.
Fold it in half on itself 3 times so that there are 8 pieces and the folded group measures approximately 8".
Tie a piece of olive yarn to the half point or fold of the wires.
This will be the top of the branch.
Single crochet 6 st around the folded group of wires, making sure to keep the stitches taut to the folded end.
Rotate but do not turn work, so that you are working back down the right side of the single crochet sts.
Insert hook through second st from hook (only into the right chain link of the sc st), pull yarn through – leaving loop on hook, around 1/4" long. *Insert hook through next st (right chain link) on hook, and pull yarn through – leaving loop on hook.* (you should have 3 loops on hook now)
Repeat from * to * until the last st. (6 loops on hook, all approx. 1/4")
*Loop yarn around hook, and pull through last loop on hook.*
Continue until there are no more loops on hook.
Ch 1. Rotate leaf to work down the left side of the chain.
Repeat what you just did on the right side of the chain sts to the left side.
Insert hook into second st from hook (this time only into the left chain link of the sc st; skipping 1st crochet st from hook), pull yarn through loop – leaving 1/4" loop on hook.
*Insert hook through next chain (left link only) on hook, and pull yarn through – leaving loop on hook.*
Repeat from * to * until you reach the last ch st.
*Loop yarn around hook, and pull through last chain on hook.*
Continue until there are no more loops on hook.
Single crochet, inserting hook into the top stitch from the left side to join and create the leaf tip.
You have created your first leaf.
Repeat to create additional leaves along the folded wires - varying the amount of single crochet stitches forming the stem to make longer and shorter leaves.
Repeat until you have approximately 2-3" of wire left.
Tie a knot tight around all the wires to secure work, and wrap yarn around ends to hide wires and tie off to secure.
Weave in tail at top of stem.
Repeat with different lengths of wire to create different lengths of branches.
Tie the bases together, wrapping the wires together as you go.
Add mini shoots to branches by crocheting single or double leaves and tying them to the main branch, then weaving in any loose ends.
To create a flower, cut and fold desired wire length to create the stem as you would for the leaves.
Instead of tying the olive yarn to the folded wires to start, you will tie the flower to the stem once it is constructed and then crochet the stem and leaves.

To create the base of the flower:
*With the hot pink yarn, ch 8. Hc in 1st ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc until there are 2 ch left, sc in next st, hc in last st.*
This creates the first petal, which should naturally curl under.
Repeat from * to * (without turning work) until there are 6 petals.
Join the petals, single crocheting along the bottom edge of all the petals for 2 rows.
On the 3rd row, sc 1, sk 1 st, sc 1, sk 1 st, sc 1. Break yarn.
Run the tail of the yarn where the petals meet down to the base.
To create the inside layer of the flower: repeat the steps used to make the flower base using the watermelon yarn, only creating 5 petals.
Slide the hot pink flower base over the folded wire.
Tie the inside watermelon layer of the flower to the fold or half point of the folded wire base.
Push the flower base and inside layer together at the end of the stem.
Tie the olive yarn to the hot pink yarn strands from the flower - ensuring knot is tight to base.
Run the hot pink and watermelon tails back up through the both the flowers so that they create flower stamens.
Tie knots around 1/2" to 3/4" from the inside of the flower and trim ends.
Since yarn is already secured, you can begin crocheting the stem for the leaves.
You can also run the first loop of the sc under one of the pink crochet loops on the end of the flower for additional security.
Repeat until there are a desired amount of stems and flowers.
Add to pot of choice and fill with pebbles or desired "mulch."
No need to water.
