SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Iron
- Sewing Machine
- Sewing Notions
- Rotary Cutter & Board
- 2 ft Quilter's Ruler
- Ultra Firm Stabilizer, 20" x 28"
- 60" Fabric, 1-1/2 yards
- Marking pen or pencil
DIRECTIONS:
- 12" x 12" x 8" high cube storage bin with pull handle
- Cut stabilizer: 1 @ 1 1/4" x 8" (handle)
- 4 @ 8" x 12" (sides)
- 1 @ 12" x 12" (bottom)
- Cut fabric: 1 @ 3 3/4" x 9" (handle)
- 2 @ 18 1/2" x 26 1/2" (random print fabric sides) or
- 4 @ 9 3/4" x 26 1/2" (directional print fabric sides, top of print along the 26 1/2" edge)
- 1 @ 14" x 27" (bottom)
- Mark lines on WS of all fabric 1" in from raw edges, except one long edge of 9 3/4" x 26 1/2" panels. Fold over all marked edges to lines and press.
- Handle: Place stabilizer inside of one long folded edge of fabric. The short ends will wrap around the stabilizer. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise to cover stabilizer. Press. Sew close to edges to secure fabric. On one side, mark a line 2" in from either short end. Set aside.
- Sides: For random print fabric, fold the side fabric panels in half, WST, matching the two now 25 1/2" sides folded edges. Press. Repeat.
- For vertical print fabric, place two fabric side panels RST, print facing the same 25 1/2" edge. Sew 1/2" seam allowance (SA) along the top raw edges. Turn RSO and press. Repeat.
- Mark a center line 12 3/4" in from either short end of side panels. Sew along the line from top folded edge to bottom folded edges. Repeat. This creates pockets for the stabilizer.
- Insert two 8" x 12" stabilizer panels into the pockets of the side fabric panels. Press the stabilizer up to the top fold and up against the center seam. If the panels have a seam at the top edge, make sure that the seam lays to one side of the stabilizer. Sew 1/4" from the top edge. Continue the stitching 1/4" in from all of the edges of the stabilizer. Sew close to the edges of the folded edges of fabric. Prior to setting and sewing the stabilizer panels into the second set of side panels sew the handle to one of the sides.
- Handle to one side panel: On one side panel mark a line 2" down from the top folded edge. This is the location of the top edge of the handle. Mark lines down from the horizontal line 2 1/2" and 9 1/2" from the center seam. These are marks for the short ends of the handle. Pin the handle into the space. Pin close to the 2" marks that are on the handle. Sew once around each end over the previous stitching and along the marks 2" from the ends of the handle. If desired, continue stitching on a diagonal through the center of the stitching. The center of the handle will curve away from the side panel.
- Continue with inserting the stabilizer into the side panels as with other sides.
- Bottom panel: Fold the bottom fabric in half lengthwise WST. Open and lay 12" x 12" stabilizer lined up with the raw edges of the folded sides. Fold the other side over and press in place. Sew 1/4" inside the edges of stabilizer. Sew close to the edges of the folded edges of fabric.
- Pin RST one lower edge of side to one edge of bottom panel. Line up corners of stabilizer. Sew 1/2" SA from one corner of stabilizer to the other corner of stabilizer. Repeat for all four sides. Clip in to the lower 1/2" of side panel, at the center seam, to flare the fabric at the corner. Sew one side at a time, starting and stopping each line with backstitching. Do not try and sew all sides with one line of stitching. Pin side panel corners together matching up top corners of stabilizer. Sew 1/2" SA.
- Turn RSO.
CRAFT HACK TIPS & TRICKS:
- To sew 1/4" inside edge of stabilizer, press one finger along fabric and stabilizer edge as feeding piece into foot of sewing machine. This will make the edge visible.
