Beginner 1-2 Hours

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Fabric - amount based on cushion measurements. See below.
  • Cushion
  • Zipper - length determined by measurement of 1 side of cushion (24" for cushion pictured)
  • Zipper foot for machine
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Pins

DIRECTIONS:

CUT LIST:
  • Pieces A & B are the pieces for the top and bottom of the cushion: Determine amount of fabric needed by measuring length x width of your cushion. Add 1" to both measurements to account for the seam allowance and cut.
  • Piece C is the long side piece that wraps around your cushion: Determine the amount of fabric needed by measuring the height of your cushion (+1") x the length of three sides of your cushion (+2"). Cut.
  • Piece D will attach to the zipper: Determine the amount of fabric needed by measuring the height of your cushion x the length of the zipper side of your cushion. Add 2" to both measurements and then cut.
  • Zipper: the length of one side of your foam insert + 2"

  1. Fold Piece D in half lengthwise. With the right sides together, pin in place.
  2. Select the longest stitch length on your machine and sew 1/2" from the edge of your fabric.
  3. Cut open the folded edge.
  4. Iron flat with the seams opened.
  5. Pin the zipper in place (right along the middle) so that the zipper and teeth are lined up straight with the soon to be open seam.
  6. Using a zipper foot, stitch along the edge of the zipper on both sides, starting below the head of the zipper. When finished, pull down the zipper head to sew the area that was missed.
  7. Use a seam ripper to open up the large stitched seam. Pull out any loose threads. Your zipper side of the cushion is finished.
  8. Fold pieces A & B in half and cut a tiny notch to mark the center. Do the same for Piece C on both sides along the length.
  9. With the right sides together, pin piece C onto piece A, making sure to match up the notches.
  10. Sew the pieces together using a 1/2" seam allowance. Begin at the notches and work your way around on either side.
  11. With right sides together, pin finished zipper piece D onto the unfinished edge of piece A and stitch.
  12. To create the new corners, pin together the ends of piece C and zipper piece D, keeping the edges square.
  13. Stitch these together, making sure that the seams match up with the corners of piece A.
  14. Cut off any overhang fabric.
  15. With the right sides together, pin piece B onto the center of piece C. Line up the notches and pin only at that point.
  16. Begin stitching from the notched center, working your way around until you hit the zipper piece. Then go back to the notched center and go the opposite way to finish.
  17. Open the zipper several inches.
  18. Pin the last unfinished edge of Piece B to zipper piece D.
  19. Flip the cover right side out and fill with your cushion.

JOANN HACKS:

  • If your cushions are slightly rounded on one side (like the one pictured) use your cushion insert as a template to help you cut it accurately. Lay your cushion down on your fabric before cutting.
