DAHLIA HEADPIECE
JOANN HACKS:
- Scissors
- Low temp hot glue gun
- Low temp hot glue sticks
- Green Satin Simplicity Headband
- Nylon Coated Flexible Jewelry Wire
- 12"x12" Corrugate cardboard
- (60") 5/8" Green Satin Ribbon
- 1/2 yard pink felt
- 1/2 yard green felt
- Pencil/white colored pencil/fabric pencil
- Compass Craft knife
DIRECTIONS:
DAHLIA HEADPIECE
- Cut out scalloped pattern piece. Place straight edge of scalloped pattern piece to straight edge of felt. Trace pattern using pencil/white colored pencil/ fabric pencil in short, repetitive strokes. Cut out piece from felt.
- Cut out petal pattern piece. Lay on pink fabric. Trace piece 40 times on pink felt. Cut out petals from felt.
- Cut 1 yard of wire and fold in half. Place wire, folded end toward scallop points, along first vertical edge of scalloped felt piece. Attach wire with hot glue. Wait until completely cooled to ensure wire is firmly attached. Roll up scallop felt piece firmly, wired edge first. Use hot glue gun to glue down outer edge. This will form the center of the flower. Wire will be used later to attach flower to headband. Fold down scallop points to form center of flower.
- Add petals: Pinch each pink petal piece together at flat end, approximately 1/2" from base. Apply generous amount of hot glue to end. Press flower end, fold down, to flower center, just below line of scallop bases. Hold for a count of 10 to ensure petal is firmly attached. Attach petals all the way around floral center so that petal edges touch.
- Add second row of petals below first, placing each petal between and below petal pairs in first row.
- After completing 4 rows of petals, fluff petals as necessary to make flower fuller. If there are extra petals, you can add into any areas that need more fullness.
- Using compass, draw 8" diameter circle on corrugated cardboard. Cut circle out with craft knife. Pierce small slit or hole in center of cardboard. Thread wire from flower center through slit.
- Trace 10 leaf shapes using petal pattern piece on green felt. Cut out pieces. Arrange 8 leaves evenly around top edge of cardboard circle, so that leaves generously over edge. Attach using hot glue. Find the fullest part of the flower. Arrange 2 remaining leaves under existing leaves. This will mark the front of the flower that will face forward on the headpiece. Allow 2 leaves to hang down generously. Attach under existing leaves with hot glue.
- Put on headband and experiment with flower placement in mirror. When happy with placement, mark where center slit of cardboard piece should line up on headband. Tie wire tightly at the mark and tack down knot of wire on underside of headband. Hold wire tightly in place until glue is full dried.
- Cut out 10 to 15 additional leaves from green felt using petal pattern piece. Cut out left scallop guide and place on one side of leaf. Trace guide. Repeat for each leaf. Fold each leaf in half and cut along traced line.
- Lay ribbon flat on table. Place one leaf in center of ribbon. Flat edge of leaf should be centered vertically on ribbon width. Lay out odd number of leaves on each side of center leaf, so that edges of leaves just touch. Place second row of leaves on top of first layer, with each top leaf centered above a bottom pair of leaves. Experiment with layout of leaves before gluing. When satisfied with placement, glue to ribbon using hot glue gun.
- Try on leaf neckpiece. Tie in bow at back. If more leaves are need add to existing. Trim bow tails as desired.
JOANN HACKS:
- Practice makes perfect. Layout leaf arrangements on headpiece and neckpiece before gluing. When satisfied with arrangements, glue with glue gun.
- Flower petals can be made out of different shades of pink. Try a lighter shade at top, followed by consecutively darker shades for each row below to create ombré effect. Contrasting shades of green can be used for leaves on headpiece.
