SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye in Black
  • 12" Straw Wreath Form
  • Dried Corn Husks
  • Wide Ribbon with Wire
  • Baking Sheet
  • Plastic container or Stainless-Steel Sink
  • Hot Glue Gun/Glue Gun Sticks
  • T-Pins
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Plastic Table Cover
  • Paper Towels

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cover work area with plastic table cover and have paper towels handy to protect against any possible spills.
  2. Fill a plastic container or stainless-steel sink with three gallons of hot water. The water should ideally be 140F. If tap water is not hot enough, heat water on the stove and add to the dyebath.
  3. Wearing rubber gloves, add a bottle of well-shaken Rit All-Purpose Dye in Black to the dyebath.
  4. Dip three husks into the dyebath and hold them until desired color is achieved. Lay them to try on sheet pans lined with paper towels. Repeat to create enough to cover the 12" wreath form.
  5. Once they've dried a little and are damp, begin layering the dip dyed husks on the wreath and pin them in place. This helps to shape the corn husks to the curvature of the wreath.
  6. Let the cornhusks dry overnight. Once completely dry, unpin the husks and gently rip them in half to create narrower strips.
  7. Adhere one dip dyed strip onto the wreath form with the dip dyed end towards the middle of the wreath. Work your way around the wreath.
  8. Add another layer of dip dyed husks, alternating with the ones already adhered on the wreath form.
  9. Add another layer depending on the look you're going for.
  10. One glue has set, bend the ends of husks up and down for variation.
  11. Flip wreath over and pin down any inner edges of the corn husk.
  12. Add a ribbon and adhere to wreath as shown.
