SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back for Fabrics tape
  • White clothes
  • Felt sheets in a variety of colors (pink, purple and white)
  • Headband
  • Foam unicorn horn
  • Adhesives
  • Sequin trim
  • Glitter paint
  • Craft foam

DIRECTIONS:

  1. To make the mane and the tail:
  2. Take a 9"x 12" felt sheet and cut one inch wide strips all the way along. Leave the top 2 inches uncut. Repeat with a couple more sheets, in various colors.
  3. Layer the uncut edges and glue them in place just above the fringe. Repeat this with four more sheets. Add glue to the top and roll it all up.
  4. Let the glue dry. Repeat, so you have two (one for the mane and one for the tail).

  5. To make the belt:
  6. Take a long strip of white felt, 2 inches wide. For the best fit, this should be the circumference of your child's waist plus 4 inches. Glue the sequin trim onto the belt.
  7. Next, take a pack of VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back for Fabrics tape. Stick one piece of hook tape and one piece of loop tape to each end of the belt to fasten it. Glue the tail onto the inside of the belt.

  8. To make the unicorn headband:
  9. Take a foam unicorn horn, cover with glitter paint and leave to dry.
  10. Take another frayed felt sheet and cut it in half. Glue at the top and roll it up. Then make a few more for bangs.
  11. Glue the mane onto the headband, trim the small bang pieces then glue them onto the headband. Attach the horn to the headband with wire & glue. Glue the felt over the wire to hide it.

  12. To make the cuffs and shoe covers:
  13. Trace and cut a curved piece of craft foam. Stick a piece of VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back for Fabrics tape to each edge and stick it down. Follow the same steps for cuffs and shoe covers.

CRAFT HACK TIPS & TRICKS:

  • While this DIY unicorn costume is fairly quick to make, make sure you allow plenty of time for the glue to dry before your child wears it.
