SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Quilt cotton fabric:
  • 1/6 to 1/4 yd each of 9 or more assorted white, off white, tan, brown, light and dark gray quilt fabric prints for dog faces
  • 2 yds White Kona Cotton for sashing and background of dog blocks
  • Thirteen (or more for variety) 6”x6” Novelty fabrics for bandanas
  • Scrap of black quilt cotton print for noses
  • 1 3/8 yd Backing fabric
  • 1/2 yd Binding fabric
  • 45”x60” Cotton batting
  • Embroidery thread to match nose fabric color
  • 6”x6” HeatnBond
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
  • Quilter’s Curved Safety Pins
  • Scrap of template plastic
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Sewing machine with open toe foot and walking foot
  • Iron and pressing surface

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Note: These are basic directions, extensive quilting experience necessary. You are encouraged to mix and match dog fur colors for each of the dogs.
  2. Note: 1/4” seam allowance used throughout.
  3. Cutting:
  4. From the dog fur fabrics cut one 3 1/2”xWOF strip and one 1 1/2”xWOF strip. From the 1 1/2” strips each dog requires two 1 1/2”x4 1/2” (A) for ears, two 1 1/2”x1 1/2'” (B) for ears, one 1 1/2”x4 1/2” (C) for main face and 1 1/2”x1 1/2” (D) for main face. From the 3 1/2” strip each dog will require one 3 1/2”x4 1/2” (E) for body, two 1 1/2”x3 1/2” (F) for legs, one 3 1/2”x2 1/2” (G) for main face, one 3 1/2”x2 1/2” (H) for face patch.
  5. From the white Kona cotton cut one 50”xWOF piece. From that piece cut eight 2 1/2”x length of fabric (note, 50” length not WOF) for sashing. Using the remainder of the fabric (which will be about 22”x50”) cut twenty 6 1/2”x2 1/2” (L) strips for sashing.
  6. From the remaining 22”xWOF Kona cotton cut two 2 1/2”xWOF strips and six 1 1/2”xWOF strips From the 2 1/2” strips cut fifty 2 1/2”x2 1/2” squares (J) and from the 1 1/2” strips cut 150 1 1/2”x1 1/2” squares (K).
Cricut Maker Machine Option
  • All quilt pieces can be cut using the Cricut Maker by loading design into the the Cricut Design Space.
  • It works best to cut the fabric with the Cricut Maker using a rotary blade to prevent pulling of the fabric.
  • Use the Cricut Washable Fabric Pen to mark patterns.
  • Cricut fabric cutting requires a pink fabric grip mat. (Do not clean or scrape the FabricGrip mat as it will damage the adhesive)Sew a narrow hem around all four sides of the bandana fabrics then cut in half diagonally to form the bandana shape needed for each dog.
Putting the Quilt Together
  1. Set sewing machine to a straight stitch with a stitch length of 1.5, a short stitch length to sew the patches together.
  2. Follow illustration 2 for assembling block. Note, for variety sew the patch on the face to the left or to the right.
  3. For Face:
  4. Place a K on each end of A. Sew diagonally across, trim off the excess triangle and press.
  5. Place B and D on H and sew across diagonally, trim and press as in previous step.
  6. Place B on G and sew in the same manner as above.
  7. Sew the two face pieces together (B/D/H and B/G) and press.
  8. Place a K on each end of C and sew in the same manner. Sew to the bottom of the face piece. Press.
  9. Sew the ears to the sides of the face. Press.
  10. Trim the blocks if needed.
  11. For the Body:
  12. Sew an F on each short end of E and press.
  13. Place bandana over the sewn E/F piece and pin in place along top edge. Place J over each top corner, sew along the diagonal, trim and press.
  14. Sew the face to the top of the body. Press.
  15. Trace 25 of the nose shape on the paper side of the HeatnBond. Fuse to the back of the black nose fabric and cut out noses.
  16. Fuse the noses to the face. Set the machine up for a satin stitch with a stitch width of 2.5 and stitch length about .5. Thread the top of the machine with the embroidery thread. Test sew on a scrap of fabric. Sew the noses to the faces.
  17. Assembling Quilt Top:
  18. Arrange the blocks in five rows of five blocks each. Arrange the blocks in a pleasing manner distributing the bandana fabrics and the dog fur colors throughout.
  19. Sew the L strips between the blocks in each of the vertical rows. Press.
  20. Sew the long sashing strips between the vertical rows and on the two long sides. Press. Cut off the excess length of the sashing strips.
  21. Sew the sashing to the top and bottom of the quilt top. Press. Cut off the excess length of the sashing strips.
  22. Completing the Quilt:
  23. Sandwich the quilt with the backing batting and quilt top as desired.
  24. Trim the quilt.
  25. Prepare binding and sew on the quilt edges in preferred method.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Alternate locations of the face patch for variety.
  • Precutting the pieces and making stacks and labeling each stack (like piece C or piece F, etc) helps keep the pieces organized and encourages mixing colors for each dog.
