1/4" seam allowance unless noted.
Print and cut templates. Cut and label fabric.
WINGS
- Fuse Flex Foam to the wrong side of a pair of satin upper and lower wings (one left and right wing of each).
- Fuse interfacing to the wrong side of the remaining pair of satin upper and lower wings (one left and right wing of each).
- Use basting spray to adhere sheer print to all eight satin wings.
- Zig zag stitch top edge of sheer to satin.
- Baste less than 1/4" from all other edges.
- Use basting spray to adhere sequin pieces A-F to satin wings with interfacing backing, using the pattern for placement.
- Zig zag stitch all edges of pieces A-F.
- Place wings right sides together, one flex foam backed to interfacing backed.
- Sew around edges with 1/4" seam allowance, leaving center ends open to turn.
- Trim edges and turn wings right sides out. Press.
- Fold in open ends 1/4". Hand stitch or topstitch closed.
- Add detail stitching to the wing by topstitch top edge of sheer, through zig zag stitching. Mark vein lines on sequin panels side of wings and topstitch veins.
TAIL
- Fuse the wrong side of velour to Flex Foam. On the wrong side, mark center of top edge.
- Use basting spray to adhere wrong side of sheer fabric to the right side of the velour.
- Baste edges of the sheer fabric less than 1/4" from edges. Zig zag stitch sheer detail curves to velour.
- Use basting spray to attach 2" sequin circle centered on sheer panel. Zig zag stitch circle edge.
- Fold tail panel right sides together, matching sides and bottom curve.
- Sew from the bottom curve to 6" from top edge. Trim edges at the curve and set aside.
MIDSECTION
- Cut notches out of Flex Foam midsection pieces as indicated on the pattern.
- Fuse wrong side of the 2 velour midsection pieces to the matching Flex Foam pieces.
- Clip into velour at top and bottom of side notches. Fold velour at notch around to back of Flex Foam. Topstitch.
- Sew two- 6" lengths of Velcro onto the right side of one midsection piece, using the pattern as a guide for placement. This will be the back midsection piece.
- Working on the wrong side of the midsection piece with the Velcro, mark the wing placement using the pattern as a guide.
- Place wings sequin sides up lining up to the marked area. Wing ends should not be layered.
- Pin or baste the wings in place.
- Flip midsection and wings over. Topstitch 1/4" and 3/4" from side of midsection to secure the wings in place. Remove pins or basting.
- Overlap lower wing slightly over top wing keeping the midsection panel flat. Hand tack the wings together through initial wing stitching.
- Cut one 3 1/2" circle from sequin, one 5" circle from sheer print.
- To make the front midsection piece, center the sheer circle 1 1/2" up from bottom edge of the the other midsection piece, and use basting spray to adhere the circle.
- Layer sequin circle on top of the sheer circle, centered and basting spray to adhere the circle.
- Zig zag stitch the edges of both circles.
- On the wrong side of the front midsection piece, mark the center of the bottom edge.
- Place the front and back midsections right sides together matching top curves.
- Sew from top of one side notch to the top of opposite side notch using 1/4" seam allowance. Clip along the curve and turn right sides out.
- Sew the side seams of the midsection by hand, maintaining 1/4" seam allowance.
- Match the center front of the tail to the center front of the midsection.
- Pin raw edge of the tail around the bottom edge of the midsection. Center back seam of the tail should meet at the back with about 1/4" seam allowance on either side. Fold seam allowance toward the wrong side of the tail.
- Sew the tail to the midsection.
- Turn the tail right sides out.
- Fill the tail and midsection with Fiberfil.
- Fold in raw edges along the tail and handstitch the hole closed.
VEST
NOTE: Use 1/2" seam allowance while constructing the vest.
- Fuse interfacing to the wrong side of all parts, front, back and hood.
- Match the front and back outer (velour) pieces of the vest right sides together.
- Pin and sew along the shoulder. Open seams and press.
- Repeat with the lining pieces.
- Construct the hood. Start by sewing the darts as marked on the pattern. Press darts to the front of the hood.
- Match hood pieces right sides together and sew from back to front on the curved edge.
- Press the seam to one side and topstitch.
- Match the hood and hood lining with right sides together. Sew along the front edge of the hood. Turn right side out and press seam.
- Pin raw bottom edge of the hood to the neck of the outer vest, centering the seam of the hood in the middle of the vest back. The front body of the vest will extend beyond the hood sides to overlap for the Velcro closure.
- Sew the hood in place.
- Match the outer and lining vest right sides together with the hood in between. Pin and sew along the center front, the neck and both arm holes.
- Clip curved seams to reduce bulk. Turn right sides out.
- Open side seams and match the lining and outer fabrics from each side of the vest. The seam at the arm hole should match.
- Pin and sew the side seams.
- Turn the vest inside out.
- Match and sew the bottom of the vest, leaving several inches open for turning.
- Turn vest right sides out. Press all seams and top stitch as desired. Close opening at the bottom of the vest by hand or machine.
- Pin sequin fabric eye circles on hood as per template. Zig zag stitch in place leaving 1" open. Stuff eye with Fiberfil. Finish zig zag stitch to close. Repeat.
- Attach one side of an 8" length of Velcro to each side of vest front opening. One side on velour and the other side on the inner satin. Center the Velcro vertically 1/4" in from finished edge of vest opening.
- Attach two 6" lengths of Velcro, the pieces that correspond to the midsection Velcro, to the back of the vest located as per template.
JOANN HACKS:
- Cinch body between midsection and tail with a few wraps of embroidery floss secured through the back of the body.
