Light blue velvet dress with cape with ruffles and pink crown

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 5/8 yard of sheer fabric for cape
  • 1/2 yard of satin or fabric of choice for ruffles around cape.
  • 1/4 yard of pink velvet for crown
  • 9" inches foam interfacing
  • 3" Velcro
  • Simplicity 8896
  • Kraft paper, pencil
  • Sewing notions

DIRECTIONS: Seams are 5/8" unless noted. Follow pattern and instructions to complete dress.

  1. Trace on to Kraft paper the outline of center back dress bodice, keeping the center back on fold. Trace the shoulder line on the back own the shoulder then curving to make room (about 3") for the arm to fit inside then continue down to hem line. Repeat the same for the front. The length of cape would be 18" from the center back to hem. Connect the hem from the sides to center front.

  2. Make a turn and turn hem down the center front and hem. Mark lines for placement of trim. Larger one at the bottom, next is the smaller trim, then large then smaller. Measure the length needed for placement of trim across the entire cape.

  3. Cut a strip out 45"x 1 1/2" to trim the neckline and tie a bow at the center front. Divide trim in half, place at center back, pin. Pin trim to center front, wrong side to wrong side, sew to neckline with a 1/4" seam. Starting at tie end, sew trim turning in 1/4" seams, top stitch closed, continuing to fold over trim, turn under 1/4" then top stitch to neckline then down to finish the trim.

  4. Cut 4 of 6" X 45" of satin or fabric of choice for larger gathered trim.

  5. Cut 4 of 3" X 45" of satin or fabric of choice for smaller gathered trim.

  6. Sew 2 each of the 6" trims together. Sew right sides together on short and long edges, leaving and opening for turning. Press. Gather to fit around the cape.

  7. Sew 2 each of the 3" trims together. Sew right sides together on short and long edges, leaving and opening for turning. Gather to fit measurements around the cape.

Crown:

  1. Measure child head circumference. Crown would be approximately 8" in height finished. The base of crown is 3". Cutting out 8 equal points 5" high. Measurements on how far apart the points would be depending on the head measurements but start with 5" apart. Adjustments can be made using Kraft paper first for pattern.

  2. Cut 2 out strips, length of head measurement X 9" out of velvet, 1 out of foam interfacing.

  3. Lay and pin foam interfacing between wrong sides of velvet. Stitch with matching thread along the edge and points about 1/4" from the edge. Trim excess close to the stitching line to enclosed 3 layers. Sew Velcro at the end of crown base to close.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Use chalk for marking lines to sew riffles on the cape.

  • Using Velcro for the crown will help in adjusting for head size.

  • Using a size #14 needle for velvet and foam interfacing help from making snags or skip stitches.
