SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • One pair of canvas sneakers
  • Rit® dye in pink
  • Rit® dye in orange
  • Rit® dye in tan
  • 12 qt stainless steel pot
  • Stainless steel tongs
  • Clean medicine dropper or straw

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Remove shoelaces. Place your sneakers in your stainless steel pot and fill it with enough water to cover them by about 2".
  2. Let them soak for 20 minutes to open the fibers.

  3. Remove the sneakers and add 1 T of pink Rit® dye to the water for a light pink. Stir well.
  4. Heat on medium for 20 minutes and then add wet sneakers.
  5. Heat until they've reached one shade darker than desired color. They will dry lighter. This can happen quickly so keep an eye on them.
  6. Remove and rinse excess dye off.

  7. Dump your dye pot and wash out excess dye residue. Refill your pot with hot water about 1/4 full and add 1 T of orange dye. Stir well.
  8. Fill your medicine dropper with orange dye and add a few drops of dye on each side of your shoe in the same three or four places. Keep things concentrated in those same spots for darker color. Repeat with other shoe.
  9. Once you're ready for the next color, rinse out your orange dye pot and clean. Fill pot with clean water and add 2T of tan dye. Stir well.
  10. Repeat step eight until you've reached your desired outcome.
  11. Let shoes dry and add shoelaces
