SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye: Tangerine, Cocoa Brown and Scarlet
- ColorStay Dye Fixative
- Cheesecloth
- Container or Stainless Steel Sink for Dyeing
- Measuring Cup
- Salt
- Dish Soap
- Gloves
- Plastic Table Cover
- Paper Towels
DIRECTIONS:
- Cover work area with plastic table cover and have paper towels handy to protect against any possible spills. Gather supplies.
- Before dyeing, remove any visible stains on the shoe and pre-wash in warm soap water without any fabric softener. This helps to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption.
- Fill container or sink with 3 gallons of hot water (140F).
- Shake bottles and add Rit Dye All-Purpose Liquid Dyes into dyebath, stir well. We used the Harvest Color Formula: 1/2 Cup Tangerine, 2 Tbsp Cocoa Brown and 2 Tbsp Scarlet.
- Add 1 cup of salt and 1 tsp of dish soap to promote level dyeing.
- Cut off a piece of cheesecloth to use as a swatch and dip it into the dyebath to test the color. Add more water or dye depending on the saturation you're going for.
- Once you're satisfied with the color, submerge cheesecloth into dyebath wearing gloves and stir continuously for 10-15 minutes or until desired color is achieved.
- Optional: use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative to enhance color, increase color retention and prevent dye from bleeding.
- Rinse runner under cold water until water begins to run clear.
- Hand wash in mild detergent and hang to dry.
