SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye (Rose Quartz and Fuchsia)
- 5 1/2 yards of Calico or Cotton Fabric
- Washing machine for dyeing
- Measuring cup
- Salt
- Liquid dish detergent
- Rubber gloves
- Paper towels
- Sewing machine
DIRECTIONS:
Pink Pillow with Poms:
- Gather supplies.
- Using the hottest water setting, fill the washing machine with enough water for the fabric to move freely.
- Shake dye bottles well and add 3 bottles of Rose Quartz dye.
- Immerse 5 meters or 5 1/2 yards of pre-washed calico fabric to the water.
- To enhance color, add one cup of salt to the dye bath.
- Add 1 teaspoon of dish detergent to help promote level dyeing.
- Complete a wash cycle, and then place the dyed fabric into the dryer or hang dry.
- Once dry, cut out a 5m long x 30cm wide strip of fabric. Use your sewing machine to hem the edges of this strip and then sew/gather the middle of the fabric to create a long ruffle.
- To create your pillowcase, take an old pillow and place it on top of your fabric.
- Fold your fabric over the pillow so the pillow is entirely covered in fabric. Pin the fabric around pillow, leaving one side open so the pillow can be removed.
- Remove the pillow and cut of any excess fabric around your pinning.
- Sew the edges and flip your pillow inside out so that your pillow edges are clean.
- Sew your ruffle around the edge of your pillowcase.
- Sew a pom pom to the center of the case.
- Pop your pillow back into the pillowcase. Tuck the open side of fabric in and don't sew it closed (this will allow you to wash your pillow/case if needed)
- To clean the washing machine: Wipe around the inside of the lid and pour a little bleach through the internal dispenser (if there is one) as dyes can get into these areas. Then, fill washer to the highest water level there is and select the hottest water temperature setting. Add detergent with 2 cups of chlorine bleach and run a full wash cycle with 3 old towels.
Tie Dye Pillowcase:
- Lay out a flat piece of rose quartz dyed calico fabric onto a flat surface.
- Pinch up 20cm handfuls of fabric (roughly 20cm apart) and secure tightly with rubber bands.
- Repeat this step across and down the fabric.
- Bunch up banded fabric into a dense roll and rubber band together.
- Using the hottest water setting, fill the washing machine with enough water for the fabric to move freely.
- Shake dye bottles well and add 2 bottles of Fuchsia dye.
- To enhance color, add one cup of salt to the dye bath.
- Add 1 teaspoon of dish detergent to help promote level dyeing.
- Immerse bunches of rubber banded fabric into the dyed water.
