SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
DIRECTIONS:
With a 24" tail and size 5 DPNs, cast on 32 (28, 36) st using the German twisted cast-on method, spread over 3 needles. Most cast on methods will work; the German twisted cast-on method will provide additional stretchiness.
Working in the round, work in 2 x 2 rib (knit two, purl two) for 7 rows or approx 1". The Eastern knitting method will also provide a cleaner looking rib stitch.
Switch to size 7 DPN’s and k for 20 rows or 3".
To begin the increase for the palm & thumb, M1R, k2, M1L, k to end of row (2 st increased).
K 2 rows.
M1R, k4, MIL, k to end of row (2 st increased).
K 2 rows.
Repeat Steps 6 & 7 (3) more times until you have increased by a total of 10 st, knitting 2 more st between the increase sts on each increase row each time.
Place 12 stitches onto stitch holder or scrap yarn. CO 2 stitches (by looping the yarn around the needle), and k to end of row. You will pick these 2 st up in Step 12 to create the thumb.
K 5 more rows.
Switch to size 5 DPNs and work in 2 x 2 rib for 7 rows. Cast off, leaving a 6" tail to be woven in later.
Transfer the on-hold stitches onto size 5 DPNs. Also pick up the 2 st that you cast on earlier for a total of 14 st, split over 3 DPNs. You may also pick up the sister stitches on either side of the 2 st and knit each together with it’s neighboring st. This removes any gaps that would have to be seamed later.
Beginning with the two st, work in 1 x 1 rib (k1, p1) for 7 rows. Cast off. Thumb complete.
Weave in loose tails on inside of glove.
Repeat all steps to make second glove.
