NOTE: Kids size 6/8 (approximate). 1/4" SA
BELT STRAPS:
- Cut one felt 3" W x 14" L. Fold to 1 1/2" W. Sew or glue close to edge. Cut into 4, 3 1/2" sections. Set aside.
SHOULDER STRAPS:
- Cut two felt 6 1/2" W x 10" L. RST sew 1/4" SA down length and one short end. Trim corners. TRSO. Press. Cut Velcro into 4, 3" lengths. Sew or glue two widths of same side of Velcro onto strap. Set two strips centered side to side starting 1" from seam end of strap. Sew or glue in place. Set aside.
CRUST RUFFLE:
- Cut one felt 10" W x 60" L. RST sew 1/4" SA down length and one short end. Trim corners. TRSO. Fold in open end 1/2" and pin to hold. Stitch 1" from seam edge for ruffle. Start at closed end of fabric. Place fabric under machine foot. Manually advance needle once through fabric. Lift the presser foot. Gently move fabric from under the foot. Bobbin thread should be through to the top of the fabric. Grasp both the bobbin thread and the top thread. Pull threads together to 1 1/2 - 2 x the length of the fabric L. Replace the fabric back under the presser foot. Hold the two threads tightly, centered in front of the foot. Sew a zig zag stitch over the threads, on either side. Do not sew through the two threads. A ruffle will form automatically. At the end thread the center threads through a hand needle. Pull the threads so the ruffle ends at an approx. 26" L. Hand stitch the open end closed. Set aside.
- Enlarge triangle template. Transfer onto Stabilizer, cut 3 @ 35" L. Transfer to felt, cut 3 @ 36" L (1" extends above the 2' W top edge). Transfer to orange velour, cut 1 @ 36" (same as felt).
INSIDE BACK:
- See template. Lay one felt triangle RSU on a flat surface. Place cut ends of shoulder straps flush with the 2' W top edge of felt starting @ 2 1/2" from center, Velcro facing up. Baste 1/4" from edges. Place painter's tape over the Velcro. Place two belt straps, 1 1/2"x 3 1/2", straight down from the straps, 2 1/2" from center with top edges 11 1/4" down from 2' W top edge. Sew or glue 1" from either end of belt straps.
INSIDE FRONT:
- See template. Lay one felt triangle RSU on a flat surface. Place remaining sides of Velcro 1 1/4" from top edge of felt with sides starting 3 1/4" from center. Place two strips of Velcro side by side the same as on the shoulder straps. Sew or glue in place. Attach belt straps the same as Inside Back panel.
- Attach front panels: On a flat surface layer one stabilizer, inside front felt RSU, outside front felt WSU then a second stabilizer. Match diagonal sides, bottom 3" curve, top edges of fabric to fabric and top edges of stabilizer to stabilizer. Sew 1/4" SA leaving the top 8" open to turn. Clip corners. TRSO. Push out bottom curve and corners with a chopstick or dowel. Fold in opening to match seam. Stitch 1/4" from edge to close. This stitching will be placed behind the ruffle. Press to fuse layers.
- Attach back panels: On a flat surface layer one stabilizer, inside back felt RSU, then outside back felt WSU. Match diagonal sides, bottom 3" curve, top edges of fabric to fabric. Sew 1/4" SA from the center of one shoulder strap to the center of the opposite shoulder strap. Leave the top center 8" open to turn. Clip corners. TRSO. Push out bottom curve and corners with a chopstick or dowel. Fold in opening to match seam. Stitch 1/4" from edge to close or hand stitch opening closed. Press to fuse layers.
- Attach ruffle to top edge of front velour. Center ruffle, short ruffle edge down, over top of triangle. Set wide edge of ruffle 1" above the top edge of triangle. Wrap the ends of the ruffle to meet the felt on the sides of the triangle. Place clothespins along the top edge to hold ruffle in place. Hand stitch the ruffle close to the zig zag stitch to attach to the triangle. Sew up from the stitching to secure the sides in place. Apply spots of hot glue behind the large ruffle edge to further secure to the top edge of the triangle.
WHIPPED CREAM:
- See template. Cut one random curve out of felt, an approx. 10"x 11" oval. Cut 5 fin shaped curves out of cream velour. Slight shifts in shape will result in a unique dollop. RST match small top curves and side edges of fin shaped pieces. Sew 14" SA leaving bottom open. Continue until all five pieces are attached. Trim top point seam. RST bottom edge of velour to felt oval. Trim the bottom edge of velour to a consistent curve if necessary. Match quarters of oval with quarters of bottom edge of velour. Sew 1/4" SA leaving 3" open to turn. TRSO. Fill with Fiber-fil. Do not overstuff. Fold in edges of opening and hand stitch closed. Cinch the dollop with hand stitching. Start a stitch at the center of the felt. Continue the stitching up through the side seams close to the top point of the velour. Take stitches back and forth through the vertical seams pulling the thread to create dimension. Knot off often to hold the shapes. Continue down the sides of the velour panels taking stitches through opposite seams and/or through the bottom felt. Attach the dollop to the front of the orange velour. Pin in desired location. Hand stitch around the perimeter of the dollop to secure.
- Attach Velcro on shoulder straps to Velcro on inside front to attach front to back. Thread a length of ribbon through belt straps with tail ends finishing on one side of the piece of pie. Length determined by fitting. Finish the raw ends of ribbon by double folding the cut ends and securing with Tacky glue.
JOANN HACKS:
- Tacky glue works well when attaching felt to felt. Allow time for glue to set.
