Her preschool teacher sent home flashcards for her to practice using her numbers, but neither of us really enjoy learning that way. When I gave her the Hot Dots, Jr. Let's Master Pre-K Math set, she was excited to get Ace the Talking Dog for her very own. Act uses sounds, music and/or words to encourage her when she gets the answer wrong and to praise her when she gets the answer right. Even though there are written instructions that change every few pages, she has been able to figure out pretty quickly on her own what the objective for each question is. This has let me be less involved and let her be more self-directed (and self-motivated!) to learn and practice on her own. Because the questions vary, she doesn't get bored as quickly and easily as she does when she has to do flash cards. Overall, I would recommend this to others whose kids don't want to spend much time practicing numbers and other math concepts using traditional methods. (I received this product in exchange for writing a review. Regardless, all thoughts and opinions are purely my own.)

Hot Dots Jr. does a very good job at creating content that is both engaging and fun for children. I could not be more pleased with the results I am seeing and improvements my son has by because of using this!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pre-K Math Set I received Hot Dots Jr. Let's Master Pre-K Math free for review. All opinions are my own. Hot Dots Jr. Let's Master Pre-K Math includes Ace the Talking Teaching Dog Hot Dots Pen and two Hot Dots workbooks. The workbooks include questions, and multiple choice answers with a black dot next to each possible response. Your child will use the Hot Dots pen to select an answer by vertically pressing down on one of the dots. If the answer is correct a positive reinforcement will be heard and the pen will light up green. If the answer is wrong, a try again message will sound and the pen will light up red. The Pre-K Math books cover topics such as counting, patterns, time, shapes, fractions, measurements and basic math facts. Both Pre-K Math Book 1 and Book 2 were pretty easy for my 4 year old. She had to spend time thinking about things before answering. The questions are read by an adult to her, and she was able to answer questions with few mistakes, but because she concentrated so much on it, I knew it was the perfect level for her to really work on mastering these skills. She loves the Ace pen and we also love that it can be used with any of the Hot Dots sets. Overall this is a great supplemental kit for teaching kids math. The pages are durable and made to last through repeated use. These books can be used as a teaching tool and as a review for previous concepts to reinforce those ideas. I recommend this kit to anyone with a preschool aged child. It's a great introduction to math for them.

These books keep them engaged and help make learning fun. Kids love the interaction and fun that they have. No complaints about learning when they use Hot Dots Jr.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific early skills My son is a huge fan of the Hot Dots fairytales and reading books, but was a little dubious about the math books. When I told him we had them for him he exclaimed "Oh! That's going to be hard!" I would definitely recommend letting the strengths and interests of your child determined whether you start with the reading or math books.. My son has more interest in words than numbers right now, so starting with the reading books meant that he knew what he was doing with the pen and the dots before moving onto the math sets. He just started Kindergarten, but I wasn't too sure where he was in his math skills, I know he can count and add up numbers, but wasn't too sure if he knew what the written numbers looked like. Just as with the reading set, the use of the Pre-K set helped me see what he was comfortable with, and where he struggled. I felt the Pre-K math book needed more explaining than any of the reading kits we've done before, but only because the math problems were so new. I really enjoyed doing the sections on fractions and time with him, he preferred problem solving. I'm not a teacher and have no natural inclination towards it so this really helped me understand where his little mind was at.

My daughter goes to pre-school a few days a week, but I have been looking for ideas on how to help get her ready for Kindergarten on the days she's home. I really love this math kit for her. The math is simple enough, but it even covers things like fractions in an approachable way for a 4-year old. The puppy pen is also really cool and fun for a child of this age. It makes doing school "work" even more fun. We also got her the Kindergarten set because I know she'll learn the concepts in the 2 included books pretty quickly. I definitely recommend this set if you're looking to help your pre-k child get ready for Kindergarten.

The skills this set focus's on is counting/numbers, patterns, time, shapes/geometry, fractions, measurements, math facts and money. The set includes 2 book that contain 85 Interactive lessons, 15 advanced lessons and "ACE" the talking teaching Dog pen. The pen helps children to gain confidence with every right answer and redirection with every missed answer. It is also very portable and great for car rides, doctor visits, or even while grocery shopping. A great way to keep kids entertained while teaching them! We will be getting more sets!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun AND Educational! I'm a teacher and a mom of three boys and I received this product for my three-year-old twins. They LOVE dogs, so the doggie pen was PERFECT for them! I was so excited to have a product to work on math skills, and this product did not let me down! There are so many different skills covered, and I love how there are activities the boys can do now and ones they can work on as they progress. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for an educational toy for a preschooler.

This seems pretty on target for Pre-School and I like that the 2nd book has challenge pages. What's even better is my kids get excited with I pull this out to play with. I love doing a 1/2 hour each day and mixing it up with the Math and Reading. These have become a part of our daily routine and we love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Big Success! I received the Hot Dots Pre-K Math set for my just-turned-5 year old. It has been a big success in our home! This set comes with two 50-page books, each with a variety of math activities. The activity format/goal changes every 4-8 pages, so there is plenty of variety. Every time my son started to get comfortable, the book switched it up - and that's a good thing! The books are sturdy, have pages that lay flat, and have bright, attractive illustrations. This set also comes with Ace, The Talking, Teaching Dog, which is a "pen" that the kids touch to their answer choice. Ace responds with immediate feedback - with his eyes (they change color!), his sounds, and his words. After three right answers in a row, Ace gets really excited and vibrates, and my son loves it - every single time! I thought my son would get less excited about this after a while, but it hasn't happened yet! This is definitely an activity for kids to do with guidance, as the instructions/goals change every few pages. Aside from learning the goal of each page , though, my son was able to do each activity relatively independently, and the immediate feedback keeps him wanting more. He has gotten faster and more accurate in the week that we have had this set. I will definitely be purchasing more!

She really gets into her math books because in her words "I a school girl now like them (her brother and sister.) Sometimes she needs a little help and I feel that is because she has always been the baby. With help she does well and she especially likes to see what her doggy pen will say or do. I really like that the books cover different ares of math, not just counting and learning numbers. I received this for a honest and unbiased review.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Math Toy! There really aren't many toys that focus on math skills at the PreK level so I am really glad I found this. My daughter has gone from only reciting her numbers to being able to count items in just one week! I have been finding opportunities for practicing counting in our daily lives but this toy gives us a reason to really sit down and concentrate on building skills without making it seem like work. The toy is fun to play with and my daughter loves the how Ace responds to her choices. I love how simple it makes it to help her learn math skills. The lesson book is very sturdy. It's wipeable(every mother's dream!) and the pages don't rip or fold easily. The teaching pen is well constructed and has survived the 3 foot fall from kitchen table to kitchen tile several times. The packaging was very easy to open and makes a very convenient carrying case to keep every thing together. Over all the entire product seems to be of very good quality. I would definitely purchase more books and consider purchasing this in the future as a gift. The box shows it is meant for ages 4 and up but it has worked really well for my 3 year old. Some of the lessons are too advanced for her but its nice to have some growing room. Overall I would say this is a 5 out of 5.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Introduction to Preschool Math Skills I received the Hot Dots Jr. Pre-K Math set from Educational Insights for review purposes. My 4 11/12 year old has used Hot Dots before; she has both pens (Ace & Kat), two of the Interactive Storybooks, and a Phonics set. She was very excited to begin the Math work because she loves to work with numbers. Let me begin with one tip for parents and educators: this program requires adult (or literate child) guidance. There are specific instructions throughout the two books that assist the child in choosing the correct answer(s). And sometimes, the instructions are opposite to a similarly-formatted question the child may have encountered in a previous lesson. Let's Master Pre-K Math is NOT a self-directed exercise for your child, unless of course, (s)he is reading proficiently. My child enjoyed working through the well-crafted, spiral bound books. She loves the talking pen and has come to understand, through trial and error, that using it carefully and correctly really does matter. (There are specific instructions for use in the box.) I like the objectivity of the pen: Mom or Dad isn't the one telling you whether your answer is right or wrong. Granted, the phrases and buzzing get a tad annoying for an adult, but my kid really loves the self-correction that Ace provides. The lessons range from one-to-one correspondence to number symbol identification, with introductions to plane shapes, fractions, time, measurement, and sequencing & patterns. The content would be best suited to 3-4 year olds. The box states 4+, but my 4 11/12 year old (still a preschooler as she cannot enter K until next year according to our state) made her way through both books in under an hour, with few mistakes. The kind of parent who would purchase this for their child has probably introduced their child to other educational concepts and materials, so I might suggest ordering the next level up. My daughter's favorite exercise was actually the last challenge question, wherein you are asked to choose the correct quantity of ladybugs (there are 100). She initially used her powers of deduction to rule out the first 2 much smaller sums, then wanted to count each ladybug individually to make SURE there were 100. The inclusion of the pen is great, but if you purchase more than one set (I think the Pre-K Reading would be good to use in tandem), you have multiple pens that really don't have any additional functions outside the Hot Dots materials. I would have liked to see the set include some kind of rote counting number line that might reinforce the most basic math skills. Solid B+

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful set! Fun & Educational My girls are loving the Hot Dots Jr. sets! We have the Pre-K Reading and Math and I already know we will be buying the more advanced levels when they are ready! My girls are 3 1/2 and almost 2, so we will be using these sets to keep them up to speed (or ahead) for school. Pros: The activities seem pretty on target in this one for the Pre-K level. The spiral binding on the book was a amazing idea and the fun, colorful pictures keep them entertained. They love the puppy pens! It is so cool that it tells you if you are right or wrong, but also his eyes light up red or green, which they think is awesome. The activities seem pretty on target in this one for the Pre-K level. Many fun activities for them to do. I hear Ace barking away right now! Cons: Well I thought I was going to have to put that the pen is a "boy" pen and they would love to have a "girl" one...but then I saw that you can purchase Kat, a purple cat pen, or there is a fairy tale set that comes with a wand...so I guess I will put that as half a con since I will probably need to make another purchase. :) I would say that the price seems a little bit high, but I know we will get a lot of use out of them as long as the pens keep working! It needs an On/Off switch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Kg Readiness Tool! I'm a SAHM currently but I have a Master's in Education. I would wholeheartedly recommend this learning tool for parents interested in Kg readiness. My child has some difficulty with hyperactivity and attention, yet he completed multiple lessons without complaining. Some of them were repeats by my choice due to his multiple errors. He was happy to repeat erroneous lessons. A great buy! Risk-free for 1 year. I will post videos later.
