CREATING THE ENVELOPE BODY
- Print out 2 pattern pieces. Overlap and tape together so that the length of the envelope pattern is 12.5". Cut out.
- Lay the pattern piece on top of the interfacing (fusible side down). Trace around the edge with a pencil. Mark the dashed lines on the sides. Set aside.
- Select 1 piece of the 14.5" x 8.5" fabric and the 6.6" x 8.5" fabric.
- To attach the front lower piece (or Fabric B), line up this piece on top of the larger so that the shorter edges are even. This will help you to understand placement.
- Flip the smaller piece over like the page of a book, so that the right sides of the fabrics are now facing each other (but the placement of the smaller piece has now changed).
- Pin the short edge that stayed along the same line after flipping it.
- Straight stitch a scant 1/4" line along the pinned edge.
- Flip the smaller piece back over (like a book again) and iron down. This new seam will be the bottom edge of the envelope when finished. Lay this flat on the work surface.
- Select your 2nd piece of the 14.5" x 8.5" fabric and place on top of first, with the right sides together.
- Find the already patterned interfacing and lay on top of the fabric sandwich. Line up the lower dashed line with the new seam line you created earlier. Pin.
- Stitch the traced line around the perimeter of the envelope. Leave approx. 3" open at the bottom to turn.
- Trim around the edges. Leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.
- Clip the seam allowances around the edges, paying special attention to the curves of the flap. Snip off the corner edges of the bottom as well.
- Turn the project right side out.
- Flip in the bottom edges of the opening and press the entire envelope flat.
- Top stitch along the bottom edge of the envelope to close the opening.
- Using the seamed edge as the guide, fold in the bottom of the envelope to its correct placement, followed by the flap. Press everything into place.
BUTTON/ELASTIC PLACEMENT
- Depending on whether you are using 1 or 2 buttons on the envelope, locate the area along the flap where the elastic will be sewn in. The exact middle at about 3.5" from either side for 1 button OR about 1.5" from each edge for 2 buttons. Mark.
- Take a seam ripper and open up about 3/8" in the 1 or 2 elastic positions in the flap. Open it as cleanly as possible, only snipping the thread.
- Cut loops of elastic to fit the buttons of choice and tuck them into the opening/s that were created. Overlap the ends of the elastic to form an x that tucks in. Use a fabric clip to hold into place if extra support is needed to keep them there before topstitching.
- Fold the bottom piece of the envelope in and use pins or clips to hold the sides together. Keep the top flap open.
- Starting at the bottom/side edge of the envelope, top-stitch around the sides and flap of the envelope in a large U shape. This will not only top stitch the edges of the project, it will also sew the sides of the envelope closed at the same time (to create the pocket).
- Locate where the button or buttons should be sewn using your elastic loops for reference. Mark.
- Hand stitch the buttons into place.
JOANN HACKS:
- Use something pointed, like a dowel rod, blunt end of a pencil, etc. to help push out the corners and curves of the envelope after turning.

Is pattern complete?
It looks like the pattern may be missing one page? It's only one page and the pattern lines don't connect to anything
