SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Graduation caps
- Fabric for caps, approximately 10"x 10", depending on size of cap
- Jewel trim
- Rhinestone trim
- Ribbon
- Twill tape
- Glue gun
- Rotary cutter and ruler
- Basic sewing supplies
DIRECTIONS:
- Measure and cut a square of silver metallic fabric with stripes 1/2" larger on each side than graduation cap.
- Lay fabric right side down on a flat surface and wrap fabric around the edges of the cap, using hot glue to secure (start with one side and then attach the opposite side to make even) folding corners neatly to finish.
- Choose a ribbon that matches the color of the cap and attach to the raw edge of the fabric on the underside of the cap with hot glue.
- Carefully cut a small X at the button in the middle of the cap and carefully push fabric under the button to finish.
Blue Cap:
- Measure and cut a square of purple satin fabric 1/2" larger on each side than graduation cap
- Lay fabric right side down on a flat surface and wrap fabric around the edges of the cap, using hot glue to secure (start with one side and then attach the opposite side to make even) folding corners neatly to finish.
- Choose a ribbon that matches the color of the cap and attach to the raw edge of the fabric on the underside of the cap with hot glue.
- Carefully cut a small X at the button in the middle of the cap and carefully push fabric under the button to finish.
- Choose rhinestone trim and cut 1 1/2" squares to lay out on top of cap, starting at the center, in a checkerboard pattern.
- Glue squares to top of cap, folding edges of squares under cap to finish.
Green Cap (with purple satin and silver checkerboard):
- Choose rhinestone trim and cut 1 1/2" squares to lay out on top of cap, starting at the center, in a checkerboard pattern.
- Glue squares to top of cap, folding edges of squares under cap to finish.
Green Cap (with black checkerboard):
- Choose rhinestone trim and cut 4 pieces 1 1/2" longer than length of cap.
- Attach two pieces to edge of cap using hot glue and lay out other two evenly spaced on top of cap and attach with hot glue, folding under edges and trimming to approximately 1/2" on the underside of the cap.
Yellow Cap:
- Cut four 4 1/2"x 20" strips of fabric to create box pleat trim.
- Sew fabric right sides together to create a tube, turn right side out and press.
- Create box pleats and pin, leaving a 1" piece at the end to fold under at corners
- Finish ends of tube by turning under and sewing.
- Sew down center of fabric to secure pleats, press.
- Lay pleats on cap 1" from edge and use hot glue to secure to top of cap.
Pink Cap:
- Measure and cut a square of white sequined mesh fabric 1/2" larger on each side than graduation cap.
- Lay fabric right side down on a flat surface and wrap fabric around the edges of the cap, using hot glue to secure (start with one side and then attach the opposite side to make even) folding corners neatly to finish.
- Choose twill tape that matches the color of the cap and attach to the raw edge of the fabric on the underside of the cap with hot glue.
- Carefully cut a small X at the button in the middle of the cap and carefully push fabric under the button to finish.
- Attach jewel trim around edge of cap with hot glue to finish.
White Cap:
- Measure and cut a square of floral silver mesh fabric 1/2" larger on each side than graduation cap.
- Lay fabric right side down on a flat surface and wrap fabric around the edges of the cap, using hot glue to secure (start with one side and then attach the opposite side to make even) folding corners neatly to finish.
- Cut rhinestone trim 1/2" longer than edge of cap
- Glue 1/4" of trim along edge of cap and wrap excess to underside of cap and glue to secure.
- Cut ends at a diagonal to miter the corners of the trim.
- Carefully cut a small X at the button in the middle of the cap and carefully push fabric under the button to finish.
Yellow Cap:
JOANN HACKS:
- Cut rhinestone trim from the backside with a rotary cutter for ease of cutting.
- Use rotary cutter to cut fabric to size.
- Use fabric clips to help hold fabric, ribbon and trim to cap as you glue.
- Keep a glass of cool water while working with hot glue to dip your fingers in case you get hot glue on your fingers.
