Tufted Mat
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- 1 1/2yds flannel
- 2" thick foam, 24"x 40"
- 16yds embroidery floss
- Disappearing ink pen
- Basic sewing supplies
DIRECTIONS:
- Cut two 25"x 41" pieces of flannel
- Cut two 3"x 25" strips of flannel, and two 3"x 41" strips of flannel.
- Create the mat's flannel sides by sewing the strips end to end.
- With right sides together, match the short edge of a 25" strip to the short edge of a 41" strip and sew together. Then match the short edge of the 41" strip to the short edge of the 25" strip and sew together.
- Match the short edges of the remaining 41" strip to the short edges of the 25" strip and sew together.
- With right sides together, pin and sew a large flannel rectangle to the sewn side strips. Trim excess fabric off of the corners.
- With right sides together, pin and sew the last large flannel rectangle to the sewn side strips. This time leave one large edge entirely open to more easily insert the foam inside. Trim excess fabric off of the corners. Insert foam into the flannel and hand stitch large opening closed.
- Flip over so the handstitched edge is on the bottom.
- Mark tuft locations with a disappearing ink pen. Beginning in one corner, make a mark starting 2" in from the mat sides, and space each mark 4" away from each other.
- Start the second line of marks 2" from the first line, but 4" from the mat side. Space each mark 4" away from each other.
- Continue to make lines of tuft marks across the entire surface, alternating 2" form the mat side then 4" from the mat side. All lines should be 2" from each other, and all marks should be 4" from each other.
- Thread a needle with embroidery floss and pull it through the foam at a tuft mark. From the bottom, push the needle back up to the top about 1/8" from the exit point.
- Pull the floss tight and knot at least twice, and trim the excess floss. To conserve floss, hold the cut end of the floss in one hand and pull the end of the floss that is still connected to the skein taut; make your knots and trim both ends close to the knot.
- Continue tufting across the entire surface.
Self-Binding Blanket
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- 30"x 38" flannel for front of blanket
- 40"x 48" flannel for back of blanket
- 30"x 38" cotton batting
- Basic sewing supplies
- Quilting Ruler (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
- Match 30"x 38" cotton batting to wrong side of 30"x 38" flannel, pin and baste around the edges.
- On front and back flannel pieces mark the center of each of the four edges.
- On front piece, make a mark in each corner 1/4" in from each edge.
- With right sides together, match the edge centers of front and back pieces. Pin along all sides of the small square up to the mark in the corner. There will be excess from the large square at each corner.
- Stitch along the edges using 1/4" seam allowance. Stop and start at each corner mark.
- Leave at 4" opening on one side to turn blanket right side out.
- To make the mitered corners, pull the excess corner fabric away from the blanket. Match up the raw edges and create a triangle. Then, match the blanket edges together.
- Use a quilting ruler to draw a line 45 degrees from the blanket corner to the folded edge of the excess fabric. Pin in place and sew over the line. Trim the seam allowance of the excess fabric to 1/4". Repeat for all corners.
- Flatten and press new seams open and press all blanket fabric away from the center so that it will lie flat when turned.
- Turn blanket right side out and press.
- Topstitch over the "binding" seam and close the opening in the process. Flatten and press new seam open and press all center fabric.

Pattern is available for download
I think the previous two reviewers missed the "download pattern" selection right after the directions. It's a good project.

Won’t Print
The print command bar doesn’t work. “Self-binded”? The past tense of bind is bound, not binded. Even my spell-check has a hard time with that……. But really, can you just email me the pattern please? Oh, and hey,pp IT peps, most people on a mobile device are NOT using a phone. They are on a tablet, like me, and we prefer landscape view, not portrait. None of the pictures show up unless I click on them. You get zero stars. Nothing ever works on your site.
