Fabric Costume Ruff

Item # 222511589P10
Beginner Under 1 Hour

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Adult size: 2 1/2yds cotton fabric
  • Child size: 1 1/2 yards cotton fabric
  • Basic sewing supplies

  • MEASUREMENTS:
    • Finished size will be 6"-wide ruff for an adult and 3"-wide ruff for a child.

DIRECTIONS:

ADULT

  1. Use a fabric length of 2 1/2yds and cut the cotton into three strips:
    • Lay the selvedge edge of the fabric (this will be the short edge) flat on a surface.
    • Make a mark every 12" along the selvedge edge for three pieces.
    • Cut about an inch into the fabric at each mark.
    • Rip the fabric into strips at each cut mark. The fabric will rip in a straight line because of the way that woven fabric is constructed. Ripping will make this step quick and will give the edges of soft fray across the edge.

  2. Construct the Collar:
    • Layer the three strips on top of each other.
    • Fold them in half lengthwise and pin along the fold.
    • 3Mark a channel by drawing a line 1" in from the folded edge along the entire length of the edge.
    • Sew along the marked line.
    • Rip a 2" wide strip of fabric using the remaining cotton fabric.
    • Fold the 2" strip in half lengthwise and insert a safety pin at one end.
    • Pull the fabric strip through the channel.
    • Safety pin the end of the fabric strip into the end of the channel.
    • 1Pull the opposite end of the fabric strip, gathering the ruff material as you pull.
    • Pull until the entire channel is gathered.
    • Pull the fabric strip out to the preferred tie length and trim as needed.
    • Pull each layer of fabric in the ruff apart to fluff up.

CHILD

  1. Use a fabric length of 1 1/2yds and cut the cotton into three strips:
    • Lay the selvedge edge of the fabric (this will be the short edge) flat on a surface.
    • Make a mark every 6" along the selvedge edge for three pieces.
    • Cut about an inch into the fabric at each mark.
    • Rip the fabric into strips at each cut mark. The fabric will rip in a straight line because of the gridded way that woven fabric is constructed. Ripping will make this step quick and will give the edges of soft fray across the edge.
  2. Follow the construction steps for the Adult size ruff.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Feel free to change the fabric width or the number of layers for a wider/narrower or fuller/less full ruff.
  • If using tulle instead cotton, double or triple the layers for fullness.
