SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 3/8yd fabric for bag
  • 3/8yd fabric for lining
  • 3/8yd contrast fabric for flap & straps
  • 3/8yd cotton batting
  • 5" Velcro® Hook & Loop tape
  • 1" D-rings, 2
  • 1" swivel hooks, 2
  • Matching Thread
  • Basic Sewing Supplies

  • MEASUREMENT: 8"x 9"

DIRECTIONS:

  1. NOTE: Use 1/2" seam allowance.

  2. Cut two each 9"x 10" from fabric, lining and batting for front and back.
  3. Cut two each 5"x 10" from fabric, lining and batting for sides.
  4. Cut one each 9"x 5" from fabric, lining and batting for bottom.
  5. Cut one 9"x 7" from contrast and batting for flap.
  6. Cut one 4" x WOF from contrast for strap, handle and tabs.
  7. Baste or pin batting to WS of bag front, back, sides, bottom and flap.
  8. On RS of front, measure down 2" from top and center loop side of Velcro; stitch in place.
  9. For flap, cut Velcro into two 2 1/2" pieces; measure up 1 1/2" and 2 1/2" in from both sides (the inside piece); stitch Velcro in place vertically.
  10. With RST, stitch the flap sides and bottom.
  11. Trim batting close to stitching, clip corners, turn RS out and press.
  12. For strap, cut one 4"x 34" piece and press short ends in 1/2" then press in half lengthwise, open and press edges to center, refold into 1" strip.
  13. Edge stitch both sides of strip.
  14. Attach swivel hooks on both ends by turning up 1" and stitch through all thicknesses.
  15. For handle, cut one piece 4"x 7" and stitch as above.
  16. Measure down 1 1/2" from raw edge of flap and 1" from each side.
  17. Stitch handle in place on each end.
  18. For tabs cut one piece 4"x 5" fold and stitch as above (do not fold in ends).
  19. Cut into two 2 1/2" pieces.
  20. Fold each piece around the D-rings and baste to bag back 1" down on each side.
  21. Stitch front, sides and back together ending 1/2" from the bottom of each seam.
  22. Stitch bottom to front, sides and back.
  23. Trim batting close to stitching, clip corners, turn RS out and press.
  24. Repeat with lining leaving an opening in the bottom for turning.
  25. With RST, stitch flap to top back of bag.
  26. Stitch lining to bag top.
  27. Turn RS out and press.
  28. Slip stitch opening closed.
  29. Edge stitch top of bag.
  30. Attach strap with swivel hooks to D-rings.

JOANN Hacks:

  • For optional vinyl lined bag, purchase iron-on vinyl and follow manufacturer's directions to fuse vinyl to lining piece.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Where are the instructions for larger bag? I was in store and scanned the QR code to make the larger of the two bags (looks like a tote). The directions are only for the small lunch sack. Such a nice tote, please add directions for that project.
