SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Lampshade
  • Kraft Paper or Newsprint
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, and Straight Edge (or scissors)
  • Straight Pins
  • Cotton Fabric
  • Iron
  • Sewing Clips
  • Spray Adhesive

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Create a pattern by laying the lamp shade down on the kraft paper and, starting and ending at the seam, roll it across the kraft paper, tracing the edges with your pencil as you go. It will create an arc shape. Add an inch to one of the seamed ends. Add an inch to top and bottom curved sides; you can measure out an inch from many points of the curve and use those points as a guide to roughly mimic the curve by hand.

  2. Cut out pattern, and check its sizing on top of the lamp shade.

  3. Pin pattern piece to cotton fabric and cut it out. Iron fabric flat. Fold one short end of the fabric in 1/2 inch and press flat with iron. Roll in one more time and iron again. This will be the seam.

  4. Align the center of your fabric piece onto the lampshade with an extra inch of fabric hanging off the top and off the bottom, make sure any patterned images on the fabric are straight and facing the right way, then fold down extra fabric at top and bottom and secure with fabric clip. Continue securing fabric in this way all the way around the lampshade.

  5. Cover a spray area with newsprint or kraft paper. Find the raw edge of the fabric (as opposed to the seamed edge) and starting here, unclip halfway around the lampshade. Flip fabric out of the way and use the spray adhesive to spray the exposed surface of the lampshade. Carefully wrap the fabric back around the lampshade in parts, smoothing and pressing down along the way, all the way to the end. Then, unclip the other half of the lampshade and repeat the process until you reach the end. Adhere folded seam over the adhered fabric with the raw edge.

  6. Trim excess fabric at the top and bottom of the lampshade down to about 1/2 inch. Lightly pull the excess fabric, loosening the edge fabric from the adhesive a little bit, then fold and tuck the excess fabric inside the adhered fabric, all the way around the top and bottom edges. Press down.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Typical Joanns with not enough clarity in the instructions. A couple photos would’ve helped. To do this, I would experiment with inexpensive muslin to see how well this wraps around your shade without using the adhesive. Use clips at the top of the shade to check the fit. If you have patterned fabric, it’s going to go off at an angle if your shade is smaller at the top than it is at the bottom. Doable.
