SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • McCall's 8038
  • Choose fabric and supplies from pattern envelope
  • French curve plastic ruler
  • Loop turner
  • Kraft paper
  • Pencil
  • Sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Use 5/8" seam on pattern.
  2. Start with using View C for the skirt and sleeve. Use View A for the top.
  3. Trace the front top onto Kraft paper. Measure how low the satin neckline will be under the lace.
  4. Fold front pattern in half and scoop the neckline with a French curve ruler from the center front up toward the armhole up about 3".
  5. Adjustment can be made at this time on lowering or raising the neckline. With the French curve rule, curve down to 1 1/2" below armhole side seam. Measure from the highest point to add a strap up to the shoulder line.
  6. Cut two bias strips 1 1/8th wide, fold over, sew then turn with the loop turner. Sew strap into bodice and shoulder line. Sew front bodice to lining, then place lace bodice on top. The back will be lace only.
  7. Sew shoulders, front and back lace together with strap. Continuing sewing the dress as instructed on pattern.
  8. Cut out enough lace motifs to place around the back neckline. Build up the neckline to make a mock collar by placing lace on top of lace until desired collar height. Secure by machine stitching lace motifs together or hand stitching (also down the back neckline). Sew motifs to bottom of sleeve.
  9. Scallop the hemline, cutting around the motifs.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Use #14 needle when sewing lace.
  • Lace doesn't need to be hemmed as it will not ravel.
