Fall Quilted Coat

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Simplicity 8797
  • Fabric on pattern envelope minus 1/2 yd
  • Lining on pattern envelope or the same as coat yardage
  • 5" each of 4 different colors to complement coat fabric for bottom trim
  • 1" button
  • 1 Bag of cushion wrap or similar to quilting
  • Sewing notions

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut blocks 2 1/2"x 5" of the 4 different fabrics. Sew with a 1/4" seam allowance on all blocks. Arrange and sew 2 blocks horizontal and 2 vertical together. Sew all blocks together to equal the width of coat.

  2. Cut out coat and quilt wrap. Place and pin quilting wrap under coat fabric. Mark with chalk or use sewing guide to quilt at an angle every 1 1/2" on coat, sleeve, collar.
  3. Attach finished blocks to bottom of coat. Cut and sew a 1 1/2" trim at the bottom of blocks. Quilt the blocks following block lines.
  4. Finish coat as instructed to pattern.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Sewing strips blocks together in one strip, then cutting into the correct size saves time.
