DIRECTIONS:
NOTE: Old paint and varnish may contain lead. Testing kits can be purchased at most hardware stores. Always test before sanding.
  1. The furniture must first be stripped to the wood, eliminating any old paint or varnish. See JOANN Hacks for some tips on stripping furniture.
  2. Paint the furniture with your base coat of dark taupe paint and let it dry completely overnight. Use a dry brush technique and paint wood grain on top of the taupe paint with the Sheepskin paint, letting a lot of the taupe paint show. Let it dry. Water down the sheepskin paint to a liquid like whole milk. Use a foam brush to paint over the entire piece of furniture.
  3. On a piece of paper, design your layout. Count how many kinds of different pieces you will need.
  4. Use the model magic clay to create leaves, birds from molds. If the clay is sticking in the molds, lightly dust them with baking flour before pressing the clay into the molds. This will help them to release easier.
  5. You can also create shapes on your own, such as wildflowers, branches, and grass. To do this, roll the magic clay out into long pieces and then flatten them. Curve them into branch-like shapes. Use a knife to carve lines into the tree branches. Let them dry. As they dry, they will curve upward. Don't worry, you can break them into useable pieces once they are dry, and then glue them together when you place them on the furniture. Once you have made all your pieces, you are ready to glue them onto the furniture. Use the Quick Grip glue to attach the clay pieces to the furniture.
  6. Use the base taupe paint and a detail brush cover all the attached pieces of clay. Let it dry.
  7. Use the detail brush and dry brush wood grain onto the clay. Then use the detail brush and paint on the top watery milk like paint to blend in the clay pieces with the rest of the furniture.
  8. For a finishing look, use the Home Décor wood tint wax and a dry cloth to rub the edges of the clay pieces to blend them into the furniture. Also rub on a light layer of the wood tint wax onto the rest of the furniture. If you do it too thickly, while it is still wet, you can flip your cloth over and wipe off some of the wood tint wax. Let it dry.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Strip the furniture using paint stripping gel. When painting on the gel, cover the area with plastic wrap and let it sit for 2-3 hours. Remove plastic wrap and easily strip off the old paint or varnish using your putty knife. Use the steel wool and mineral spirits to remove any paint in the detailed areas of the furniture. Wipe everything down with paper towels to remove any residue.
