- Spray inside the bulb with chrome spray paint.
- Dump out any water/paint and set aside to dry.
- Repeat as needed but you want a splotchy look to the painting.
- Place the bulb down onto a wooden skewer, tape around the end of the bulb to secure it to the skewer.
- The end will be covered when the metal top is added back on, just make sure you do not tape over too much of the bulb.
- Lightly mist the outside of the bulb with water.
- You will want small droplets on the bulb.
- Using the chrome spray paint, lightly spray on a thin coat of paint.
- Allow to dry and repeat until you get the desired look.
- You can blot the paint and water drops with a paper towel to add another dimension of texture and increase dry times.
JOANN HACKS:
- Apply lots of thin coats to add layers and keep the bulb from getting too solid.
- To protect your hand when painting inside the bulb, poke the end of the bulb through a paper and secure with a piece of tape.
- The paper towel will act as a shield protecting your hand from overspray.

Use Vinegar and Water
Faux Mercury glass is done with a mixture of water and vinegar. Water alone will not make the paint bubble up and get you the splotchy look of mercury glass. Follow the tutorial here as written, just make sure you spray your ornaments with a 50-50 mix of water and white vinegar.
