CUTTING DIRECTIONS:

  1. Print and Cut out templates. Templates are for 10" x 10", 8 1/2" x 11" and 10" x 12" books up to 1/2" thick. Determine the number of each size template you are making and mark on the template.
  2. Trace envelope templates onto felt yardage and cut out.
  3. Fold sides of the envelope along dotted lines as marked on the template. Press using an iron on low heat to set the folds.
  4. Unfold the envelope and place face up on your worksurface.
  5. Use templates for bows and tags, as well as strips of felt as ribbon, to design the look of each felt present. Cut out desired shapes from felt using the templates.

MAKING TAGS:

  1. Layer felt embellishments from template or make your own. Apply embellishments with tacky glue. A toothpick may be helpful for applying glue to small pieces. Add embroidered details as desired. Cut or punch a hole at the top of each tag.
  2. Use a narrow strip of felt or ribbon to make a loop for the tag to hang from.
  3. Attach all embellishments to the envelope surface using tacky glue. Allow to dry completely. It may be helpful to glue in layers, rather than all elements at once.
  4. Press the envelope flaps closed again to crease the felt ribbon wraps.

ADDING THE BUTTON CLOSURE:

  1. Fold the envelope so that the bottom up and the top down to overlap the bottom flap. Lay two buttons onto the folded envelope.
  2. Make a stretch cord braid for a button loop. Coordinate the color with the colors of the felt envelope and the buttons. Cut three 12" pieces of cord. Single knot the three together at one end. Braid 6". Single knot to finish. Pull both end knots as tight as possible to reduce their size. Trim excess length of cord close to knot.
  3. Use embroidery floss to sew on the braided loop and the buttons. Start by sewing both ends of the braided cord to the envelope flap at the location of the top button. Braided cord will form a loop that points toward the bottom flap button. Sew button on top of the braid loop ends.
  4. Sew second button to the bottom flap.
  5. Loop the braid over the bottom button.
