- 24" balsa sticks, 10
- Tissue paper, various colors
- X-Acto® knife
- Scissors
- Rubber bands
- Glue gun/glue gun sticks

- Battery-operated tea light
Cardstock - String

DIRECTIONS:
- If you desire painted sticks, paint them first, and allow them
to dry completely. - Cut off 4" from each balsa stick. Set aside five of them to use as pegs, and discard the remaining.
- Tie a pair of bamboo sticks together on one end with rubber bands to
for m a V shape. - Repeat and make three more pairs. Total there will be four Vs and two unattached sticks.
- Join two Vs together to
for m an A shape and tie the two ends together with rubber band. - Weave one of the single sticks through the center of the A to
for m a star and tie the two loose ends together with rubber bands. - Repeat
for the other two Vs and remaining stick. - Tie the two
stars together at all five points using rubber bands tofor m a single star. - Carefully pull apart the center of the frame, and with hot glue, place a peg in each corner of the pentagon.
- With your glue stick, outline a panel on the star, and place a tissue paper that covers that frame completely.
- Carefully cut the extra paper around the panel as close as you can to the frame. Clean up the edges by gluing and wrapping the uncut edges of paper around the frame. Continue until all your desired panels are covered with paper.
- Glue the battery-operated tea light on the bottom peg.
- Tie on a
cotton string at the topfor hanging. - FOR THE TAIL:
- 1 1/2′ square sheets of tissue paper, 4, various colors
- 2" circle
cardstock cutouts, 2 - 3" chenille stems, 2
- 6"
cotton string, 2
- Layer two tissue paper pieces together and fold into a triangle. Fold again into a smaller triangle. Fold
for the third time into a smaller triangle. - Take the top corner of the triangle and fold over to the base
across . - Cut
across the folded paper starting from one side toward the other without cutting completely. Leave 1/2" space from the edge of the opposite side. - Cut
another slit 1" above the previous slit, but start from the opposite side. Do not cut completely but leave 1/2" space from the edge. Continue cuttingslits starting from alternating sides of the folded paper until you reach 2" below thetip . - Poke a small hole at the
tip . - Carefully
unfold and separate the sheets of paper to fluff the tails. - Poke a hole in the center of the
cardboard circle cut out and feed a chenille stem through and back down through the hole to create a loop, and roll the stem on the underside of the circle cut out so that stem doesn't slip out. - Poke the chenille stem through the small hole at the
tip of the tail. - Attach the tails to the bottom two corners of the star using the
cotton string.
JOANN HACKS:
- For the body, make sure the peg that will be placed on the bottom of the star is glued on flat. A battery-operated tea light can
then be attached.
