SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Large Canvas
- Acrylic Paint
- Paint Brushes
- Painter's Tape
- Optional: Oil Pastels
- Paper For Sketching or Digital Sketching Program (Procreate)
DIRECTIONS:
- Using a sketchbook or digital sketching software, start drawing the layout for your ideal fireplace. Make sure the area you're sketching is roughly the same ratio as the canvas. Use reference photos if you want to get inspired by different styles of mantles.
- This project uses a 3' x 3' canvas, so the sketch is based on that layout.
- Tape off the large areas of different color on your canvas. For this design, we chose a pink mantle, dark green hearth, and a yellow center.
- Mix up the acrylic paint and brush these three colors as your base.
- After the first layer has dried go in and add the moulding details, the firewood, and the fire with a fresh layer of acrylic paint.
- Once that layer has dried, add any outlines or lingering details by using a thin brush with acrylic paint. Alternatively, you can use oil pastels to provide a textured outline that looks similar to chalk but is more permanent.
- Decorate with garland, presents, and stocking and enjoy your fun faux fireplace!
JOANN HACKS:
- Import a photo of a mantle you like to your digital drawing app to help draw the style of mantle you like.
