- Sewing Bucket Hat:
- Seam allowance is 1/4" throughout.
- Match 2 hat brim pieces together and sew around the outer circle.
- Trim seam allowance close to the stitching line.
- Turn brim right side out, pressing the seam out with fingers to form the circle shape.
- Top stitch around the outer circle using 1/4" seam allowance.
- Continue adding top stitching lines 1/4" from the previous round until close to the inner circle.
- Match the short ends of the hat sides piece together and sew, forming a loop.
- Sew the sides to the hat top.
- Keep the hat top against the feed dogs and manipulate the sides to match the shape.
- If needed, pin at the quarter points around the top to assist with this step.
- Trim seam allowance and turn hat top and sides right-side out.
- Insert the hat top into the inner circle of the brim.
- Sew around to connect the 2 pieces, working from inside the circle with the brim along the feed dogs.
- Trim seam allowance close to the stitching line.
- Poncho:
- Fold collar in half matching the long ends (hot dog style) and sew the short ends from fold to edge.
- Trim seam allowance and turn right-side out.
- Top stitch around 3 sides of the collar - short ends and fold.
- On the poncho, fold the front edges under 1/2" and top stitch.
- Pin the collar to the neck of the poncho, centering it from the center back.
- Sew collar to neckline, then trim seam allowance.
- To make buttons, paint pearl stickers with metallic paint pen and allow to dry completely.
- Stick dry buttons to one side of the poncho.
- Hot glue can be used to secure if needed.
- For a functional center front, add Velcro® to close the poncho, otherwise glue shut and poncho can be pulled on over the goose.
- Optional Faux Welt Pockets:
- Cut 2 pieces of yellow felt 2"x 3".
- Mark a rectangle 1/2"x 2" toward the top of the rectangle, leaving 1/4" on sides and top, 1 1/4" on the bottom.
- Place the marked rectangle on the front of the poncho using the pocket placement as a guide.
- Make sure the 1 1/4" space is toward the hem.
- Sew around the rectangle.
- Cut a slit through the middle of the rectangle horizontally, then from the slit, cut diagonally to the corners.
- Flip the rectangle through the opening and finger press the seams to form a rectangular shaped hole.
- From the inside, fold the bottom portion (the larger seam allowance) up to meet the upper edge of the rectangle forming the welt.
- Pin and secure in place by sewing to the seam allowance from the inside, or edge stitching close to the opening on the outside.
- Fish Assembly:
- Glue or sew the fish face/lower body pieces to the fish body pieces.
- Each side should be a mirror of the other so that when they are placed together, the faces line up on the same end.
- Glue or sew the body pieces together, sandwiching the tail and larger fin in between the layers.
- Leave a small opening at the mouth end to insert the fishing line later.
- Glue fins and wiggly eyes in place.
- Fishing Rod Assembly:
- Water down a small amount of brown acrylic paint and "stain" the wood cup and dowel piece.
- Drill a hole in the center of the bottom of the cup.
- Feed the dowel into the hole, with the long piece of the pole extending from the bottom of the cup, and secure if needed with hot glue.
- Tie the embroidery thread to the dowel where it meets the cup.
- Tie embroidery floss to 3 spots along the dowel, leaving extra thread to hang down in between.
- Hot glue can be used to secure knots in place.
- Determine the final length of the fishing line and trim to length.
- Glue the end of the floss into the mouth of the fish.
- Glue the handle of the fishing rod to the poncho, or secure to goose as desired.
