SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Sewing notions
  • Marking pen
  • Iron
  • Rotary cutter & cutting board
  • Scissors
  • Flannel
  • Batting, Hi Loft
  • Chopstick or small dowel
  • Water spray bottle

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Enlarge pattern to desired sizes.
  2. Pin together two pieces of flannel RST for each leaf. Transfer patterns and cut out leaf images.
  3. Large leaves:
  4. Cut three sheets of batting at least 1" larger than leaf pattern. Layer the batting on a flat surface.
  5. Lay the two pieces of flannel (RST) on top of the batting. Pin every 2". Sew together leaving a 9" opening for turning.
  6. Backstitch next to the opening. Trim edges as close as possible to the stitching. Leave the area by the opening 1/2" from the pattern edge. This will give enough material to turn inside.
  7. Place one hand inside of leaf between the two flannel layers. Turn the leaf RSO. Pull the section of leaf furthest from the opening through the opening first. Use a chopstick or small dowel to push out all points.
  8. Fold in opening 1/2" matching up the fold with the seams on either side of the opening. Press all edges.
  9. Hand stitch opening closed.
  10. Draw vein lines on one side of leaf.
  11. Pin through all layers of flannel and batting every 1 1/2"-2" along the veins.
  12. Flip the leaf and check to make sure that all veins are pinned flat without any buckles in the fabric.
  13. Sew along the veins using a long stitch, backstitching at the start and stop of each line.
  14. Remove pins as each vein is completed.
  15. Small leaves:
  16. Same as the large leaves other than using 2 layers of batting instead of 3 and leave a 3" - 4" opening for turning along a flat area of edge.

CRAFT HACK TIPS & TRICKS:

  • Double check both sides of leaves to make sure that all edges have been caught with stitching prior to turning right side out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Download does work The download works fine for me. Also, the patterns are fairly straightforward. You can just draw a leaf for yourself and follow the instructions.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Instructions Won't Print I was able to print the pattern, but not the instructions. Guess one thing got fixed and the other got messed up.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad link If you need a leaf mat, Twig+Tale patterns has them in a bunch of different leaf patterns. They’re a NZ based company and their patterns are the best. They’re not free but we’ll worth the price.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Like the idea but.. I love this idea! The instructions are available so i think im going to try to draw my own leaf template since its not downloading for me either. I am trying on my phone though, not a PC, if that would change things.
