Flannel Plaid Check Mask

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Plaid fabric 
  • Denim (or coordinating) fabric for ties
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Pattern download

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Download the pattern by clicking "Download Pattern" below the "Get Patterns" tab.
  2. Cut 2 pattern pieces from fabric. To match plaid, lay previously cut pattern pieces on top of fabric making sure to match the horizontal lines of the plaid, cut 2 more pattern pieces.
  3. Match outer mask pieces right sides together, matching lines of plaid and sew the outer curve. Repeat with lining pieces.
  4. Open both mask halves and press both seam allowances to the right.
  5. Topstitch down the center seam allowance, about 1/4" from the seam.
  6. Cut pieces from denim (or coordinating) fabric to create bias tape. You’ll need two pieces that are about 48" long and 2" wide. You’ll also need two pieces that are 4"x 2".
  7. Use a bias tape maker to create 1/2" double fold bias tape or do it yourself by ironing the strap in half, then folding the two sides again to meet the center fold.
  8. Pin front and back pieces wrong sides together, matching center front seams.
  9. Baste layers of mask together using 1/8" seam allowance around the edge of the mask.
  10. Apply bias tape to the 2 sides of the mask. Trim bias tape to be even with the rest of the mask. Topstitch 1/4" from edge.
  11. Pin one 48" piece of bias tape to the top of the mask, centering it along the top edge and topstitch 1/4" from edge. Repeat for bottom edge.
  12. Finish ties by folding twice and tacking into place or knotting ends.
