Flannel Tree Beanbag Toss Game

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 3yds white flannel fabric (backing)
  • 1 1/2yd green flannel fabric (grass, tree tops)
  • 1 1/2yd purple flannel fabric (clouds)
  • 1yd brown plaid flannel fabric (trunk - placed on diagonal)
  • 1/2yd yellow flannel fabric (apples)
  • 1/4yd brown flannel fabric (apple stems)
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Sewing machine with walking foot
  • Iron
  • Tree templates 1/4, apple template
  • Pinking shears
  • 80" of 1" wide ribbon
  • Grain of choice, such as rice (for bean bags)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Out of white material, cut a 3'x 10' rectangle. Fold rectangle in half, short RST. Baste around raw edges 1/4" away from edge.
  2. Using template #1, cut purple “clouds" and green “ground" using pinking shears and place onto backing. Topstitch these into place, stitching 1/4" away from the edge.
  3. Using template #2, cut tree trunk out of brown plaid using pinking shears and place, following template. Topstitch into place, stitching 1/4" away from the edge.
  4. Using template #3, cut the three “tree top" pieces out of green using pinking shears and place, following template. Topstitch into place, stitching 1/4" away from the edge.
  5. Using apple template, cut out 5 apples and 5 stems using pinking shears. Place apples onto places indicated by template #4 and topstitch into place, stitching 1/4" away from the edge. Place “stems" at center tops of apples and topstitch into place.
  6. Following template #4, mark openings onto places indicated. Topstitch onto these lines, then trim away centers 1/4" from stitched edge using pinking shears.
  7. Cut 12 apples and 6 stems using pinking shears. Sandwich stem between two apples (WST) at top center. Topstitch pieces together 1/4" away from the edge, leaving a small hole for filling. Fill apple with grain of choice and topstitch hole closed.
  8. Trim around backing with pinking shears to “finish" all edges of beanbag toss game.
  9. Cut (4) 20" lengths of ribbon. Place center of each length onto a corner of backing and topstitch into place.
