SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- 1/2 yd Flannel solid (background color)
- 1/3 yd Flannel solid (word & tassel color)
- Pellon® Wonder Under fusible webbing
- Polyfil®
- Disappearing ink pen
- Fabric glue
- Basic sewing supplies
DIRECTIONS:
PILLOW BASE:
- Cut two 13"x 25" pieces of flannel in your background color to create the pillow base.
- Print out the attached PDFs and cut out the letters from the paper. Adhere Wonder Under to the back of the flannel you have selected for your words, following Wonder Under instructions.
- Trace letters on top of the flannel with a disappearing ink pen, cut out the letters, and if needed, remove the ink following the disappearing ink pen instructions.
- Arrange the letters onto one of the 13"x 25" pieces of flannel and adhere the letters to the flannel following the Wonder Under instructions to the pin into place.
- After the letters are adhered, layer the two 13"x 25" pieces of flannel, right sides together, and pin around the border. Then stitch around the border with a 1/2" seam allowance, leaving a 3-4" opening for filling the shape with stuffing.
- Clip the corners of your stitched fabric to reduce bulk in the corners when flipped right side out.
- Flip the stitched pieces of flannel right side out and fill the inside with batting. Then hand or machine stitch the opening closed.
TASSELS
- Cut four 5" wide and 20" long pieces of flannel (in your word and tassel color) to create the tassels. With the disappearing ink pen, mark a line along the length of the flannel, 1" from the edge of each piece. Then, on the opposite edge of the piece cut 4" long slits that are about 1/4" wide, ending the cuts at the line you just marked. This will create the tassel fringe. If needed, remove the disappearing ink.
- Now place a wavy line of fabric glue onto the 1" area you marked off on your 5"x 20" pieces of flannel. Roll the fabric tightly.
- Once the fabric is rolled tightly, add an additional dab of glue at the end to make sure the tassel is secure, and secure it in place until the glue is dry.
- After making four tassels, use a needle and thread to hand stitch them into place at the four corners of your pillow.
JOANN HACKS:
- Use a rubberband to wrap around the freshly glued edges of your tassel until the glue dries, then stitch the tassels into place.
