Fleece bean bag chair

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • For the Small bag:
    • 2 1/4 yds 36" wide cotton fabric (for lining)
    • 1 3/4 yds 54" wide fleece fabric
    • Two bags Poly-fil® bean bag filler (2.5 cubic feet)
    • 1/2 yd VELCRO® sew in tape
    • Basic sewing supplies

  • For the Large bag:
    • 4 yds 36" wide cotton fabric (for lining)
    • 4 yds 54" wide fleece fabric
    • Four bags Poly-fil® bean bag filler (2.5 cubic feet)
    • 1/2 yd VELCRO® sew in tape
    • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

NOTES:
Directions for small bag with large bag dimensions in parentheses.
Use 5/8" seam allowance unless noted.
  1. Prepare Fabric:

    • Cut 2 rectangles 28"x 40" (36"x 60") cotton fabric for lining.
    • Cut 2 rectangles 28"x 40" (36"x 60") fleece for outer bag.

  2. Sewing the Fabric:

    • With right sides together, sew cotton fabric on 3 sides, leaving one short side unsewn.
    • Trim seams and clip corners, pressing open seams on long sides.
    • With right sides together match side seams in the center and sew across top leaving open 6" to turn and fill. The 2 short sides of the rectangle will be sewn in opposite directions, allowing the rectangle to form a pyramid shape when filled.
    • Turn right side out and press.
    • Fill with bean bag filler using approximately 1 1/2 (2 1/2 to 3) bags or until desired level.
    • Sew opening to finish lining bag.
    • With right sides together, sew fleece fabric on 3 sides, leaving one short side unsewn.
    • Trim seams and clip corners.
    • With right sides together match side seams in the center and sew approximately 3" from side, leaving open approximately 20" to insert lining bag with filler.

  3. Making the Handle:

    • Cut one rectangle 4"x 9" fleece for handle.
    • Fold rectangle in half long ways with right sides together. Sew along the long edge and turn right side out.
    • With right sides together center handle on top edge of fleece and sew.

  4. Adding Velcro:

    • Measure Velcro to fit the opening and sew close to edge of seam allowance and Velcro tape.
    • Insert filled lining into fleece bag and seal Velcro edge.


JOANN HACKS:

  • Choose 2 different colors of fleece for a different look.
  • A zipper can be used to replace the Velcro.
