SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- 2 1/2yds 55"-60" wide fleece (main fabric)
- 2 1/2 yds 55"-60" wide coordinating fleece (lining)
- Matching thread
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Diagram 1
- Templates A & B
DIRECTIONS:
To print the templates, click on the "DOWNLOAD PATTERN(S)" tab.- Cut 1/2yd lengths of fabric from the full 2 1/2yds of both the main fabric and the lining fabric for the hood.
- With right sides together, cut (2) Template A pieces from main fabric and (2) pieces from lining fabric. From lining fabric, cut (2) pieces from Template B.
- With right sides together, pin and sew center back seam of hood using 1/2" seam allowance. Repeat with hood lining.
- With right sides together, pin hood to hood lining along front edge, lining up center back seam at the top of the hood.
- Sew along front edge using 1/2" seam allowance. Turn right side out and smooth lining to inside of hood.
- Baste neck edge of hood to neck edge of hood lining.
- Topstitch along front edge 1/2" in from sewn edge.
- With remaining 2yds of main fabric and lining fabric, trim off selvedge edges. The width of the fabric becomes the length of the blanket, and the yardage (2yds) becomes the width of the blanket. Line the main fabric up with the lining fabric and trim off any excess fabric from either to make two rectangles of the same dimension. See Diagram 1.
- Take the pieces cut from Template B and fold under 1/2" along the longest edge. Topstitch in place. These will become the pockets.
- Pin the pockets to top left and top right corners of the lining, with the finished side facing the right side of the lining. Baste along the two raw edges. Set aside.
- Find the center point along the top edge of the blanket and mark with a pin.
- Line up the center seam along the neck edge of the hood with the center point of the blanket, with like fabric together and pin in place.
- Baste hood to blanket.
- With right sides together, pin lining to main blanket fabric, making sure the hood is between the two layers of fabric. Using 1/2" seam allowance, sew all four sides of the blanket, leaving an 8" opening along the bottom edge to turn.
- Turn right side out. Hand stitch opening closed.
- Smooth all the sewn edges and pin in place. Make sure the pockets are laying over the lining fabric and not turned to the outside of the blanket. Topstitch around entire blanket 1/2" from sewn edge.
JOANN HACKS:
- FOR DIRECTIONAL FABRIC OR TO SIZE UP: Increase the yardage of fabric to double the desired length of the blanket and add 1/2yd for the hood. Cut 1/2yd off and set aside for hood. With remaining yardage, cut in half and trim off selvedge edges. Pin the two pieces together along cut selvedge edges and sew 1/2" seam to join. Double the width of the fabric now becomes the width of the blanket, which may be too wide. Trim both sides evenly to desired width for blanket. Repeat process for the lining fabric. All other instructions remain the same.
- TO DECREASE SIZE: Decrease the size of the hood by removing desired amount from the front edge and the neck edge. Decrease pocket size by removing desired amount from the two shorter sides. See dotted lines on Template A and B for examples. To decrease the size of the blanket, simply decrease the width and length of the rectangle. Width should be a little wider than arm span so that the blanket wraps around the body.
