SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/2yd fleece solid (background color)
  • 1/3yd fleece solid (word & tassel color)
  • Polyfil®
  • Permanent marker
  • Fabric glue
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

    PILLOW BASE
  1. Cut two 13"x 25" pieces of fleece in your background color to create the pillow base.
  2. Print out the attached PDFs and cut out the letters from the paper. Place the letters upside-down onto the fleece you have selected for your words. Lightly trace with a marker, then cut out the letters.
  3. Arranged the letters onto one of the 13"x 25" pieces of fleece and pin into place. Choose either a zig-zag stitch or a straight stitch to sew the letters into place, removing the pins as you go along.
  4. After the letters are stitched into place, layer the two 13"x 25" pieces of fleece, right-sides together, and pin around the border. Then stitch around the border with a 1/2" seam allowance, leaving a 3-4" opening for filling the shape with stuffing.
  5. Clip the corners of your stitched fabric to reduce bulk in the corners when flipped right-side out.
  6. Flip the stitched pieces of fleece right-side-out and fill the inside with batting. Then hand or machine stitch closed the opening.

  7. TASSELS
  8. Cut four 5" wide and 10" long pieces of fleece (in your word and tassel color) to create the tassels. Mark a line along the length of the fleece, 1" from the edge of each piece. Then, on the opposite edge of the piece cut 4" long slits that are about 1/4" wide, ending the cuts at the line you just marked. This will create the tassel fringe.
  9. Now place a wavy line of fabric glue onto the 1" area you marked off on your 5"x 10" pieces of felt. With the marker side facing up, roll the fabric tightly, enclosing the marker lines as you roll, hiding the lines in the process.
  10. Once the fabric is rolled tightly, add an additional dab of glue at the end to make sure the tassel is secure, and secure it in place until the glue is dry.
  11. After making four tassels, use a needle and thread to hand-stitch them into place at the four corners of your pillow.

Craft Hack Tips and Tricks:

  • Use a rubber band to wrap around the freshly glued edges of your tassel until the glue dries, then stitch the tassels into place.
