DIRECTIONS:
To find the downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.Seam allowances are all 1/4"
- Cut out 6 of the hat top pieces from the outer fabric and 6 from the lining fabric.
- Cut out 1 of the interfacing, lining & outer of the front bill.
- Cut out 2 of the interfacing, lining & outer of the back bill.
- Cut out 2 ties 20" x 1.75".
- Press the bill interfacing to backside of the bill lining pieces.
- Press the ties with the long outer edges folded inward to meet in middle. Fold in half, joining the new folded edges & press again.
- Sew along the edge to close the ties up, creating a tube.
- Tie one end of each tie.
- Sew two of the hat top pieces together on the side from the bottom up. Add a third on in the same way. Repeat for the other 3 pieces.
- Now that you have 2 halves, sew them together along the arch.
- Repeat for the lining of the hat top. On the first two pieces though sew the top 1" & bottom 1" leaving the middle open. Later this opening will allow you to finish the lining & turn the hat right-side out.
- Sew the center back seam of the bill.
- Sew the front bill to the back bill pieces along short edges.
- Assemble bill lining in the same way.
- With good sides facing each other, sew along outer edge.
- Clip the seam allowance.
- Flip right-side out & press.
- Top stitch near the edge of the bill.
- Pin the hat top to the bill, lining up the top's seams with the seams & notches on the bill. Sew the circular seam.
- Pin the ties to the seam allowance on the lining, 1" behind the bill seam.
- Pin then sew the lining in the same way as the outer (catching the ties). You will do this through the opening you left in the lining top.
- After you are done with this seam flip the hat right-side out. Fold the seam allowance inward & stitch along the edge to close the opening.
- Line up the circular seams on the outer & lining. Pin along the Top's seams. Top stitch on the bill near this seam, making sure not to catch the ties.
JOANN HACKS:
- When ironing an enclosed seam, use your fingertips to gently roll the seam allowance outward before pressing.

Terrible instructions
I'm in total agreement with the others on this... I've been sewing for decades, but the last part of these instructions make absolutely no sense.

Bad Directions
I started making this hat, got most of the way done and am stuck. The last part of the directions makes absolutely no sense to me. Maybe pictures or a better explanation would have helped. From here down makes no sense to me:
Pin then sew the lining in the same way as the outer (catching the ties). You will do this through the opening you left in the lining top.
After you are done with this seam flip the hat right-side out. Fold the seam allowance inward & stitch along the edge to close the opening.
Line up the circular seams on the outer & lining. Pin along the Top's seams. Top stitch on the bill near this seam, making sure not to catch the ties.
You are supposed to attach the lining of the cap portion and then turn it right side out. I know what that means but there is no way to do that because the bill is already done so turning the hat will not work. And I am not sure if I should put the cap portion on for the lining and the outer - right sides together or wrong sides together. I am going to have to figure out a solution to this because I really like the idea of this hat.

Very poor instructions
I'm a quilter who occasionally sews clothing. This pattern does not include what size it is, how to adjust the size or any documentation and pictures to assist the person sewing it to be successful in making this project.
This is not only true for this project but for all of their projects. If you don't have pre-existing knowledge of how to do a project, you are left to guess at the techniques you need.
Please start giving your projects to someone who doesn't know the project and let them document and photograph the instructions for your projects. I've pretty much given up on doing any of your projects.
Please start writing your instructions for anyone who has never done a project like the one you are posting. Make your directions more like a quilting project and more customers will be successful and want to continue making more of your projects.
