DIRECTIONS:
- FOAM CORE FABRIC BACKER:
- Iron fabric, set aside. Place existing backer from frame flat on foam core. Trace frame backer and set aside. Trim foam core along traced line using X-Acto® knife. Test to make sure foam core fits in frame before completing craft. Trim as needed. Place fabric on flat surface, place foam core on fabric. Trim fabric square that is approx 1/2' wider than foam core on all sides (does not need to be precise). Spray adhesive onto one side of foam core according to directions on adhesive can. Lay fabric on adhesive side of foam core. Using clean sheet of paper, affix fabric to board by rubbing fabric from center to each edge. Bond just needs to hold fabric in place, does not need to be perfectly affixed.
- FLORAL ARRANGEMENT
- Using wire snippers, cut 5 bottle brush pieces from floral pick approximately 8" in length. Gather pieces together at base and wrap wire tightly with white floral tape. Allow 1/4" wire to remain uncovered from base of bottle brush. Spread out bottle brush pieces evenly into fan shape. Set aside. Using wire snippers, cut 5 lily pairs from floral picks, each approximately 6" long. Gather pieces together at base and wrap wire bases together tightly with white floral tape. Allowing 1/4" wire to remain uncovered from base of lily pair. Spread out lily pairs evenly to create a fan shape. Set aside. Using wire snippers, cut 7 faux feather pieces, each approximately 6" long. Gather pieces together at base and wrap wire bases together tightly with white floral tape. Spread out faux feathers evenly into a fan shape. Use scissors to round off trimmed edge of faux feathers. Set aside.
- Using wire snippers and scissors, trim 5 faux feather pieces from bottle brush pick and four corn shuck pieces to 4.5" lengths. Gather pieces together and wrap tightly at base using white floral tape. Lay faux feather fan on top of bottle brush fan, and lily fan on top of faux feather fan. Place feather/corn shuck bunch, taped end to taped ends, on top of fans. Wrap wired jute twine around gathered bases of fans in an X pattern to cover floral tape. Wrap additional piece of wired jute just below X as many times as necessary to cover remaining tape. Lay floral arrangement on foam core to ensure it fits. Trim floral or feathers as necessary to ensure it sits at least 1/2" inside each edge.
- Bend and manipulate fans as needed to fill space. When satisfied with arrangement, place it in the center of foam core. Using large gauge needle, pierce two holes on either side of jute wrapped center. Cut floral/jewelry wire into 4" length. Feed ends front to back through holes in foam core. Twist wire together tightly on the back of the foam core to hold arrangement in place.
- Clean off any bits and pieces of florals sticking to fabric. Wrap extra fabric around each edge of foam core and tape in place with small piece of tape in center of each edge. Wipe dust and lint from inside of shadowbox glass. Place arrangement in frame. Put existing backer from shadowbox on top of foam core and seal closed. Be sure to put existing backer in hanger side up. Hang shadowbox on wall or display on mantle, shelf, etc.
JOANN HACKS:
- Practice makes perfect: Lay out pieces on backer or flat surface first, according to directions, but without applying floral tape. Make any additions or subtractions of floral elements as desired. Take a quick photo on your cellphone to use as a reference when assembling the final piece.
