DIRECTIONS:

To find the downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.
  1. Print out the template provided and use an X-Acto knife to cut out the pattern. We printed our templates on heavier cover stock paper for durability.
  2. Untie and remove the rope handle, set it aside, and save it for the end of the project. Use fine sandpaper to lightly sand the wine box. Smooth rough edges and remove any slivers. Next, paint the front and back of the "sliding door" and the inside and outside of the wine box with ultra-matte acrylic chalk paint. We used the color "milk jug." Three light coats on the outside and two on the inside should do it. Dry thoroughly between coats.
  3. Use a ruler and pencil to faintly mark the vertical centers of the sliding door and each side of the wine box as a guide for positioning templates.
  4. Use the paper template to faintly trace an overall pattern on the wine box door and sides. Add flower centers using a .5" plastic circle template or a center saved from the paper template you cut. Paint floral design with acrylic paint. We used "burnt sienna." Use a thin brush to outline shapes and fill in color with a slightly larger flat paintbrush.
  5. When you are done painting, add several layers of a spray matte acrylic coating to the entire box. Reattach rope handle. Select a lovely vintage to place inside.

JOANN HACKS:

  • We used a spray matte acrylic coating to add durability to the paint. A gloss coating would work great too.
  • Use a fine line marker similar to the acrylic paint color to trace the floral design with a crisp edge.
  • Circle stencils are helpful for tracing curved shapes if you decide to use a marker.
