DIMENSIONAL MATTED FLORALS
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Frames with mats, glass removed
  • Gold Spray Paint
  • Dried flowers
  • Power Tac Adhesive
  • Scissors

DIRECTIONS:
  1. If painting the frames, remove them and either paint or spray them. This may take a couple of coats, and it will need dry time.
  2. While they dry, begin arranging the dried flowers into collections that fit the frame and mat. Keep proportion in mind while arranging them. Determine how far they will stick out from the mat, how tall they will be, and how wide the arrangement will be in the frame. To avoid the mat gapping from the frame backing piece, choose FLORALS with thin stems, and don't add too many that will make it bulky.
  3. Trim the stems so that they will tuck below the mat without sticking out of the bottom.
  4. Using the Power Tac, glue the stems to the bottom of the back of the mat. Make sure that the heads of the flowers come out in front of the top of the mat to achieve the dimensional look.
  5. When the flowers are dry, assemble the frame with the mat and backing piece, putting it all back together without the glass. If it needs more security, the mat with the flowers can also be glued to the backing piece.

FABRIC-LINED SHADOWBOX
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Shadowbox frame, 8"x 10"
  • Loctite, Spray Adhesive, High Performance, 13 1/2oz
  • Fabric, Cotton, 8"x 10"
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Pins
  • Toothpicks
  • Power Tac Adhesive
  • Floral Stems

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Open the shadowbox frame and remove the back. Cut the fabric to fit to the edges of the backing. Spray Loctite adhesive to the wrong side of the fabric and the right side of the backing panel. Wait 5-10 minutes. Press the sprayed side of the fabric to the sprayed side of the backing panel, matching edges.
  2. Lay the backing panel on a flat surface with the hanger towards the top. Use a pin to mark the center of the top and bottom, 1" in from the edge. Repeat for the sides, 1 1/4" in from the edges. These pins will be guides to keep the floral arrangement vertical and centered in the same space for each shadowbox.
  3. Layer small cuttings or individual stems of floral between the pins. Cut any exposed ends of the stems at an angle. Some flower heads may need to be cut completely from the stem to set low enough so the glass does not crush the petals. Pin the leaves so some areas are raised from the backing panel. Replace the frame on the panel and check floral placement. Some petals may need to be adjusted to lay flat. Place pins on either side of the stems, angled away from the stems. These will act as guides to reset stems on backing after adhesive has been applied. Lift individual stems and lay a small bead of Power Tac to the back. Reset on backing panel. Place small beads of Power Tac to select areas of leaves and flower heads and press back in place between pins. Immediately pull pins and replace in same locations angled tightly over stems. This will keep pressure on the stems as the adhesive sets. Clean the tip of the Power Tac tube often to keep a small bead of adhesive flowing. Clear away visible glue around floral with the tip of a toothpick or pin. Gently pull adhesive away at an angle from the edges of floral. Adjust weave of fabric at pin holes, gently scrape at the fabric with the side of the point of a pin. Brush away any unwanted debris.
  4. Clean the glass of the shadowbox. Replace the frame on the backing.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Avoid large blooms. flower heads may be crushed beneath the glass of the shadowbox.
  • Isopropyl Alcohol Prep Pads work well to clean the tip of Power Tac tube.
  • A 12" piece of 22 gauge wire or wooden skewer works well to adjust the flower petals that may be pressed against the glass of the shadowbox. Insert wire or skewer into one side of box as frame is being replaced. Adjust floral and completely close box.
