Fur and Patchwork Leather Pillows

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1yd Fur Fabric (per fur pillow)
  • 1yd Leather Fabric (per leather pillow)
  • 20" Pillow Form
  • 16" Pillow Form
  • 14"x 28" Pillow Form
  • Basic Sewing Supplies
  • Rotary Cutter, Mat and Ruler

DIRECTIONS:

FUR PILLOWS:
  1. Cut a 21"x 21" square of fur fabric for the pillow front. (Cut from the back side of the fabric.) 
  2. Cut 2 pieces 15"x 21" for the back of the pillow.
  3. On the two back pieces, finish one 21" edge by folding under 1/2" and then another 1/2" and stitch 1/4" from edge.
  4. Lay the 21"x 21" piece right side up.
  5. With right sides together, lay the back pieces on the front, overlapping the center finished edges and matching the outer edges.
  6. Pin and sew around all 4 sides using 1/2"  seam allowance.
  7. Trim the corners and turn the pillow right side out.
  8. Carefully pull or brush out fur that has caught in the seams.
  9. Insert a 20" pillow form.
LEATHER PILLOWS:
    NOTE: For 14"x 28" pillow:
  1. Cut 4 rectangles of fabric 9"x 16".
  2. With right sides together, sew the long edges of two pieces together, twice.
  3. With right sides together match seams and sew short edges together to create a block pattern for the front of the pillow.
  4. Cut 2 rectangles of fabric 17"x 16" for back pieces.
  5. On the back pieces, finish one 16" side by folding under 1/2" twice and topstitch 1/4" from folded edge.
  6. Lay the front piece right side up and lay the two back pieces with right sides together matching edges and overlapping the finished edges in the center to create an envelope back.
  7. Sew around outer edge using 1/2" seam allowance.
  8. Clip corners and turn right side out.
  9. Finger press outer seams and topstitch 1/2" from edge of seam to create flange around pillow.
  10. Insert pillow form.
    NOTE: For 16"x 16" pillow:
  1. Cut 4 squares 10"x 10" to create block pattern for pillow front.
  2. With right sides together, sew two blocks together twice.
  3. With right sides together, match seams and sew the two sections together to create block pattern for pillow front.
  4. Cut 2 rectangles 12"x 19" for back of pillow.
  5. On the back pieces finish one 19" side by folding under 1/2" twice and topstitch 1/4" from folded edge.
  6. Lay the front piece right side up and lay the two back pieces with right sides together matching edges and overlapping the finished edges in the center to create an envelope back.
  7. Sew around outer edge using 1/2" seam allowance.
  8. Clip corners and turn right side out.
  9. Finger press outer seams and topstitch 1/2" from edge of seam to create flange around pillow.
  10. Insert pillow form.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Mark pattern lightly with marker on back side of fur as it will not show through.
  • When cutting fur fabric, carefully cut from the back side of the fabric, trying not to cut through the fur pile, for ease of cutting and less mess with the fur.
  • Use a walking foot on your sewing machine.
  • Use clips instead of pins to hold fabric together before sewing to prevent marks in the fabric.
  • Use a longer stitch length and contrasting thread for topstitching around leather pillow.
