Crate Liner with Bunting
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Crate
- Cotton fabric
- Canvas - two colors (1/8 yd of each)
- Basic sewing supplies
- Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- Two dowel rods, both cut to 21"
- Drill with 1/16" drill bit
- Thin cotton twine
- Staple gun
DIRECTIONS:
- Measure the length and width of the bottom, long side, and short side of the interior of the crate. Add an inch to the length and an inch to the width of each measurement.
- The lining will be double sided so that you will also see the right side of the fabric through the slats in the crate. Cut one bottom, four short side pieces, and four long side pieces.
- Piece together two interior side linings - Match the short edges of each piece right sides together: long side edge to short side edge, long side edge to short side edge, etc. Sew together and repeat for the second interior side lining.
- Set lining aside and cut 20 crate bunting flag pieces from the same cotton fabric. Match right sides together to create 10 crate bunting pieces. Sew around the edges, cut the excess fabric off the seam allowance in the point of the bunting. Turn right side out and press with iron. Repeat for remaining 9 flags.
- Line five flags evenly spaced apart across the top edge of one long side, raw edges together, right sides together. Baste into place. Repeat for the opposite long side.
- Place the second side, lining right sides together with the first side lining, flags sandwiched in between. Sew all the way around the top edge. Flip right side out and press with iron.
- Pin the bottoms of the side lining right sides together to the bottom lining piece, matching seams to corners, and sew all the way around.
- Place the lining inside the crate and hot glue top inner edges to the top of the crate, all the way around.
- Use a 1/16" drill bit to drill a hole at the top of each 21" dowel rod. Thread an embroidery needle with the cotton twine and pull through the dowel rod hole and double knot. Place a dot of hot glue in an inner corner of the basket lining to keep the dowel rod in place while you string the other side. Place a dot of hot glue on the lining corner to keep that dowel rod in place as well.
- Cut a 2"x 4" strip of your fabric, fold in 1/2" on each long side and press with your iron. Fold in 1/2" and then another 1/2" on the short sides and press with your iron. Place across your dowel rod at the top of the basket and staple snugly on either side of the dowel rod. Repeat for the other side.
- Cut five Canvas Bunting Flags on a fold; three of one color, two of a secondary color. Press the fold crease down with your iron.
- Set the flags in place along the strung cotton twine and place a couple dabs of hot glue in the crease of the flag to hold them in place.
