Intermediate Weekend Project
Lollipopper
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • 2 Pieces of EVA black foam 1” thick tubing - 36” each piece
  • 1 36” sheet of thin EVA black foam
  • Heat gun
  • Acrylic paint in: lilac and bubblegum pink, white, brown/grays
  • Medium paintbrush
  • ?” dowel rod
  • 20 Rubber bands
  • x-acto knife
  • Scissors

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Lay the foam tubing on a flat surface. Roll one end into a tight circle.
  2. With your heat gun, wave back and forth until you see the foam starting to stick together. Roll the bunched circle, heating on the top surface of the flat piece and roll the bunched circled onto the heated/melted strip. Continue to heat the foam tubing that is lying flat and roll the circle to make the circle/donut shape as big as you like. It should be about 8-10” in size.
  3. Make another circle repeating step 2.
  4. Paint each circle independently, one pink and one lilac.
  5. Paint the swirls on top of the base paint once they have dried.
  6. On both circle pieces using your x-acto knife cut out a trough in the center from top to bottom. Lay the dowel rod in the trough to see when you are deep enough.
  7. Using the thin sheet of black foam, wrap the dowel rod overlapping the edge. Hold the sides together by wrapping on to it with rubber bands.
  8. While holding the dowel rod, use the heat gun to fuse the seam together. You can also hit the areas with the rubber bands to create a texture.
  9. Once it is cooled, you can paint it brown/grays.
  10. Lay one painted circle face down and lay the dowel on the trough. Using the heat gun soften the backside of the circle. Place the top circle on top of the dowel rod to smash the two together. Using the heat gun you can lightly melt the seams together.

Hammer
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • 1 Pieces of EVA black foam ?”” thick sheet – 20x24”
  • 1 18” sheet of thin EVA black foam
  • Heat gun
  • Acrylic paint in: brown/grays
  • Medium paintbrush
  • ?” dowel rod-18”
  • 20 Rubber bands
  • x-acto knife
  • Sandpaper
  • 1 Tube Quick grip glue
  • Scissors

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Using the thin sheet of black foam, wrap the dowel rod overlapping the edge. Hold the sides together by wrapping on to it with rubber bands.
  2. While holding the dowel rod, use the heat gun to fuse the seam together. You can also hit the areas with the rubber bands to create a texture.
  3. Remove rubber bands when cooled.
  4. Once it is cooled, you can paint it brown/grays.
  5. Cut out 2 pieces of 1/4”foam in the shape of a hammerhead.
  6. Use your heat gun to bend the two pieces around the dowel rod to shape it
  7. With your x-acto knife and sandpaper, shape the head to have a wedge at one end.
  8. Use jute to tie the head onto the foam covered dowel rod.

Helmet
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • 1 Assorted pieces and thickness of EVA black foam
  • 1 thick sheet of ?” EVA black foam – 20x30” base of helmet
  • Heat gun
  • Acrylic paint in: grays
  • Medium paintbrush
  • x-acto knife
  • 1 Tube Quick grip glue
  • Beading or studs on a strand
  • Metallic boy/machine looking ribbon
  • Balloon
  • Standard coffee cup
  • Masking tape

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Blow up the balloon to the size of the head who is wearing the costume and using the masking tape attach it to the coffee mug. This will be your form.
  2. Cut a piece of the ?” EVA foam and wrap it around the coffee mug to create the base layer. As you are forming it around the balloon use the heat gun to shape it in a curve.
  3. Using the x-acto knife and a metal straight edge cut the shape of the form on the sides of the head at an angle.
  4. Attach cross pieces to hold the front of the mask together and also leave room for the mouth opening.
  5. For the top front of the mask, cut the piece in the shape of a wedge to cover the crown of the head. Attach each side to the base form by using the heat gun to melt them together.
  6. To make additional pieces to the helmet to give it more depth, cut out shapes with your x-acto knife or scissors to be applied on top of the black surface and paint them gray to contrast with the black foam.
  7. Attached the additional pieces with Quick grip glue or melt them to fuse with the heat gun.
  8. To create embellishments across the brow, attach the studding or metallic ribbon using Quick grip glue.

JOANN Hacks:
  • Paint pieces before layering them on top of the base form. It is easier this way.
  • Be careful not to get the heat gun too close because it will melt too fast and lose its shape.
