Doll Pillowcase Dress

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/4yd floral fabric or fat quarter
  • sewing machine
  • scissors
  • 1/4" wide matching ribbon, 28" length
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut two pieces from fabric that measure 8"x 9 1/2". Place right sides together. Using a 1/4" seam, sew 9 1/2" sides together, but stop at 3" from top on both sides. This will create two “v"s that will be the armholes. Open seams and finger press the seam allowance open. Top stitch the arm hole seams so there is not a raw edge. Fold 1/4" down on the top edge of the neckline and top stitch. Fold down that same edge again but by 1/2" and top stitch very close to the edge. This will create a neckline that you will pass the ribbon through. Attach a safety pin to one edge of the ribbon and feed it through first one piece and then the next. This will be tied in a bow on one side of the dress to form the neck on the dress. Turn hem edge of dress up 1/4" and then 1/4" again and top stitch.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Pressing the 1/4" seam with an iron (or finger pressing) will make hand sewing the seam together much easier
  • Sleeping Bag with Pillow for Doll

    SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

    • 1/4yd plain fabric or fat quarter
    • 1/3yd printed fabric sewing machine
    • Scissors
    • Small amount of stuffing
    • Basic sewing supplies

    DIRECTIONS:

    1. For sleeping bag, cut two squares of fabric, one from solid and one from print fabric, that are 18 1/2"x 18 1/2".
    2. Fold each in half with right sides together.
    3. Sew the floral fabric along the bottom and up the side stopping at 4" from the top. Use a 1/4" seam.
    4. Trim corners and turn right side out.
    5. Sew the plain fabric only up the side, stopping 4" from the top. The bottom is left open. Do not turn right side out.
    6. Now slip the plain fabric “tube" over the floral bag, matching the top raw edges and the openings on the side.
    7. Right side of both should be together. Sew 1/4" seam up one opening side, across the top and down the other opening side.
    8. Trim the corners.
    9. Pull the solid fabric up so both right sides are showing. Turn in 1/4" fabric along open end of solid fabric and hand sew closed. The solid fabric will be the lining in the sleeping bag.
    10. Push it down into the bag.
    11. For the pillow, cut one 4 1/2"x 12 1/2" rectangle from the print fabric. Fold in half width wise, right sides together, to form a 4 1/2"x 6 1/4" rectangle.
    12. Sew along one long edge and up the short edge with 1/4" seam, leaving the top open to turn.
    13. Stuff lightly and hand sew the edge together.

    16. Tote Bag for Doll

      SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

    17. 1/4yd fabric or fat quarter
    18. Sewing machine
    19. Scissors
    20. Basic sewing supplies

    21. DIRECTIONS:

      1. Cut from fabric two side pieces 7"x 3"; two side pocket pieces 5"x 3"; two strap pieces 10"x 3" and one bag center piece 16"x 5 1/2".
      2. On both pocket pieces turn under 1/4" and top stitch. This is the top edge of the pockets. Pin each to a side piece matching the bottom edges and side edges. The wrong side of the pocket piece should be on the right side of the side piece. Baste together along raw edges.
      3. With right sides together, pin one of the side pieces (with pocket) to the center piece by putting a long edge of the side piece along the long edge of the center piece. The side piece will be shorter than the center piece. Sew 1/4" seam down the side piece. Now turn the side piece so the bottom raw edge is matched to the side of the center piece. This will create the bottom the bag. Now turn the side piece so the other side with the raw edge is lined up with the rest of the center piece, raw edges aligned and sew.
      4. Repeat with the other side piece (with pocket) and the other side of the center piece, right sides together.
      5. Turn under the top of the tote 1/4" and top stitch. Then turn that edge under again 1/2" and top stitch. For straps, fold both pieces in half-length wise and press. Open and turn in length wise long edges again, so they meet in the center. Re-fold in half again. This will now be 10"x 3/4" straps. Top stitch down both sides.
      6. Attach handles to bag by placing the edge of one strap inside the bag so the strap is above the bag and strap is 1/2" from seam at the side of the bag. Sew through all layers.
      7. Attach the other side of the strap to the same center side 1/2" from the side piece. Attach the other strap on the other side of the center piece in the same way.
