BASIC STOCKING
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Stocking & cuff template
- Exterior fabric
- Quilt batting
- Interior fabric
- Cuff fabric
- Rotary cutter, cutting mat, straight edge
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine, matching thread
- Safety pin
- Iron
- Scissors
DIRECTIONS:
- To find the downloadable pattern click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.
- Print out the stocking and cuff template.
- For the body of the stocking you will need quilt batting, exterior fabric and interior fabric. Make sure to fold the exterior fabric and the interior fabric before pinning on the stocking template and cutting - cutting on the fold will make sure that your reverse sides line up.
- For the cuff of the stocking you will need your cuff material and quilt batting. If your selected cuff material is very thick already, however (like fur), you may choose to omit.
- After cutting all of your pieces, you will have six stocking pieces, and four (or two, if omitting the cuff batting) cuff pieces.
- Sandwich together the interior, batting, and exterior for one side of the stocking and baste together to keep in place. Sandwich together the interior, batting, and exterior for the other side of the stocking and baste together to keep in place.
- Then, take both stocking sandwiches and place the exteriors together and pin.
- Sew all around the stocking, leaving the top open. Turn right-side out to make sure that all layers made it into your seam. Then, turn wrong-side out again and cut little triangles every ΒΌ" around the curves of the heel and toe. Make sure not to clip into the seam.
- For the cuff, layer the cuff material over the quilt batting (if using) and create a side seam by folding vertically, right sides of the cuff material together. Pin down the raw edge and sew. Turn the seam so that it is in the center of the back of the stocking, and fold down horizontally.
- Turn the cuff so the raw edge is on top and the folded edge is on the bottom, then place inside of the stocking. The raw edge of the cuff will match up with the raw edge of the stocking. Pin all the way around and sew, leaving an inch or two open on the left side so that you may attach the hang loop.
- For the hang loop, cut a piece of 1 1/2"x 6" piece of fabric and fold vertically right sides together. Sew down the long side. Attach a safety pin to the end and pull safety pin through to the other side, so the tube of fabric turns right side out. Press with iron and fold in half.
- Place the hang loop in the open area of your stocking seam.
- The cuff should still be inside the stocking. Sandwich the loop in between the cuff layers and the stocking layers, match the raw edges together. When placed correctly, you won't be able to see the hang loop from the outside, except for perhaps about 1/8" of the raw edge, sticking out from in between cuff and stocking layers.
- Sew together the rest of the raw edge.
- Turn cuff down and press if needed.
WOOL SOCK
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Tan herringbone wool fabric
- White satin fabric
- Mustard crushed velvet fabric
- Gold fringe trim
- Gold Ric-Rac trim
- Fabric Fusion glue
- Lightweight interfacing (optional for stuffed star tag)
- Quilt batting (optional for raw edge star tag)
- Small length of thin white ribbon
- FiberFill, a very small amount (optional for stuffed star tag)
DIRECTIONS:
- Follow the basic stocking instructions using the tan herringbone wool for the exterior fabric, white satin for the interior fabric, and mustard crushed velvet for the cuff._x000B_Once assembled, add trim. Use a ruler to mark your trim line, then lay down a thin line of the Fabric Fusion, press trim onto the glue, and pin in place using straight pins. Leave to dry completely, then remove pins.
- For a stuffed star stocking tag, make a 6" star shape using your computer's word processing software, print out, and cut.
- Fold white satin in half and cut star out, making two satin stars.
- Fold interfacing in half and cut star out, making two interfacing stars. Apply interfacing to backs of satin with iron, then pin.
- Fold small length of thin white ribbon in half and place inside of star, folded edge lined up with the raw edges of the star, length of the ribbon inside of the star.
- Sew together, leaving an opening along one leg of the star to pull back right-side out.
- Clip seams down to about 1/4", clip extra fabric off the seams at the star tips, and turn right-side out. You will need to use something to push the tips of the stars out, the handle of a thin paintbrush works well.
- Use paintbrush handle to push small amount of FiberFill into the star tips and body of the star, then turn in open seam and sew; this is easiest done with the zipper foot on the sewing machine.
- Tie ribbon onto hang loop at desired length.
- For a star stocking tag with unfinished edges, make a 4" star shape using your computer's word processing software, print out, and cut.
- Fold white satin in half and cut star out, making two satin stars.
- Fold quilt batting in half and cut star out, making two quilt batting stars.
- Sandwich together satin star, two layers of quilt batting, and another satin star, right sides of satin facing out. Fold small length of thin white ribbon in half and tuck folded edge inside of the seam line of the star, with the length of the ribbon hanging out.
- Sew all the way along the edge of the star.
- Trim edges to 1/4", make sure to pin your ribbon out of the way so you don't accidentally trim it.
- Tie ribbon onto hang loop at desired length.
SEQUIN SOCK
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Blush pink sequin fabric
- White satin fabric
- Burgundy crushed velvet fabric
- Deep purple crushed velvet fabric
- Burgundy pom pom trim
- Large burgundy pom pom
DIRECTIONS:
- Follow the basic stocking instructions using the blush pink sequin fabric for the exterior fabric, white satin for the interior fabric.
- For the cuff, cut burgundy crushed velvet and deep purple crushed velvet fabric into 2"x 6 1/2" strips, eight of each color. Sew strips together down long edge with 3/8" seam. Press seams open. Follow basic cuff and stocking instructions the rest of the way._x000B_Once assembled, add pom pom trim along bottom edge of cuff.
- Lay down a thin line of the Fabric Fusion, press trim onto the glue, and pin in place using straight pins.
- Leave to dry completely, then remove pins.
- Tie pom pom onto hang loop at desired length.
PLAID SOCK
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Black & white buffalo plaid fabric
- White satin fabric
- White fur
- 4"x 4" Chip Board (or you could use the back of an old notebook or any other recycled thin chipboard)
- Paste glue, like Yes! Paste or Craft Bond Glue Stick
- Small length of thin white ribbon
- Hot glue gun/glue gun sticks(optional)
DIRECTIONS:
- Follow the basic stocking instructions using the black and white buffalo plaid for the exterior fabric, white satin for the interior fabric, and white fur for the cuff. You may omit the quilt batting for the fur cuff and use fur only.
- For the letter tag, use your computer's word processing software to print out a large letter of your choice.
- Cut out letter, then use it as a template to cut out the chip board, and then use it as a template to cut out to fabric letters - one the same size as the printed letter, one with about 1/8" space all the way around (this is to tuck fabric over the sides of the chipboard, so this extra bit of fabric will be whatever the thickness of your chipboard is.)
- Cover the surface of the chipboard letter with a paste glue and press fabric onto it. Flip over and repeat for the back surface and chipboard sides.
- Trim excess side fabric with scissors or a sharp knife.
- Take your small length of thin white ribbon and fold in half then attach to your letter with either a small dab of hot glue or a dab of your paste glue and set something heavy on top so that it bonds tightly.
- Tie your ribbon onto your hang loop.
