Beginner 1-2 Hours

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Holiday fabric
  • 1/4 yard of complementary fabric for the straps
  • Decorative trim
  • Black 1/8" elastic
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors or rotary cutter
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Thread
  • Straight pins
  • Iron

DIRECTIONS:

Adult Mask with trim:

  1. Cut pattern pieces from your fabric.
  2. Cut two strips of fabric 1 1/2"x 40". Cut two strips 8"x 1 1/2". Fold fabric in half lengthwise and press. Open up and bring both edges to the center fold lines and press. Fold in half to make ties and side trim and press.
  3. Match outer mask pieces right sides together and sew the outer curve. Repeat with lining pieces.
  4. Open both mask halves and press both seam allowances to the right.
  5. Topstitch down the center seam allowance about 1/4" from the seam.
  6. Pin front and back pieces wrong sides together, matching center front seams.
  7. Baste layers of mask together using 1/8" seam allowance around the edge of the mask.
  8. Sew two smaller strips to the sides of the mask, trim edge to make even with the top and bottom edges.
  9. To add trim, sew two smaller decorative trim strips to the front sides of the mask, trim edges to make even with the top and bottom edges.
  10. Center the longer ties and pin across the top and bottom edges of the mask, folding over the edges and top stitching 1/4" from the edge.
  11. Finish tie ends by folding twice and tacking into place or knotting ends.
  12. Adult Mask with red bias:
  13. Cut pattern pieces from your fabric.
  14. Using the Complimentary Fabric, cut two strips of fabric 1 1/2"x 40". Cut two strips 8"x 1 1/2". Fold fabric in half lengthwise and press. Open up and bring both edges to the center fold lines and press. Fold in half to make ties and side trim and press.
  15. Match outer mask pieces right sides together and sew the outer curve. Repeat with lining pieces.
  16. Open both mask halves and press both seam allowances to the right.
  17. Topstitch down the center seam allowance about 1/4" from the seam.
  18. Pin front and back pieces wrong sides together, matching center front seams.
  19. Baste layers of mask together using 1/8" seam allowance around the edge of the mask.
  20. Sew two smaller strips to the sides of the mask, trim edge to make even with the top and bottom edges.
  21. Center the longer ties and pin across the top and bottom edges of the mask, folding over the edges and top stitching 1/4" from the edge.
  22. Finish tie ends by folding twice and tacking into place or knotting ends.

Child’s Mask:

  1. Cut two 5"x 8" squares.
  2. With right sides together, sew 1/4" seam allowance along the top and bottom 8" sides.
  3. Turn the fabric right sides out.
  4. Fold the side openings in 1/4" and press.
  5. Fold one pleat approx. 1" from the bottom and press. Fold an additional pleat approx. 1" from the first pleat and press.
  6. Cut the elastic into two 6" strands.
  7. On the left side of the mask, place one end of the elastic strand between the fabric so that one end is at the top and one end is at the bottom and pin. Repeat for the right side.
  8. Sew down each side of the mask making sure to back stitch over the elastic to secure it.
  9. Top stitch all around the mask.
  10. Cut two strips of decorative trim the length of the mask.
  11. Pin to the top and bottom edges of the mask. Sew into place.
