SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Poly-fil®
- Flannel fabric: refer to the specific pillow shapes below for exact measurements
- Pom poms or 9/32" cable cord depending on trim chosen: refer to the specific pillow shapes below for exact measurements
- Pins
- Zipper/piping presser foot
- Scissors
- Needle & thread
- Iron
DIRECTIONS:
- Small triangle: Cut out 2 pieces of fabric (one for the front, one for the back) in a triangular shape where each side is 14 1/2" long.
- Pin your triangle shape with right sides together and straight stitch the seam along the entire edge, leaving about 5" open at the end. Seams should be 1/2".
- Flip your shape right side out and plump up with the Poly-fil.
- Hand sew using an invisible stitch at the opening to finish.
- Medium triangle: Cut out 2 pieces of fabric (one for the front, one for the back) in a triangular shape where each side is 16 3/4" long.
- Gather approx. 45" of your pom pom trim. Pin your triangle shape with right sides together and sandwich your pom poms between them, facing the inside of the shape. Straight stitch the seam with your zipper foot along the entire edge, leaving about 5" open at the end. Seams should be 1/2".
- Flip your shape right side out and plump up with the Poly-fil.
- Hand sew using an invisible stitch at the opening to finish.
- Solid round pillow: Cut out 2 pieces of fabric (one for the front, one for the back) in a circular shape where the diameter is 18 1/2".
- Cut out (2) 44"x 2" strips for the trim. Sew strips together on the short end, using the diagonal stitch method.
- Gather approx. 56" of 9/32" cable cord. Then wrap your strip around the cording and stitch with your zipper foot as close as you possibly can to the cording along the entire length.
- Pin your circular shape with the right sides together and sandwich your cording between them, facing the inside of the shape. Straight stitch the seam with your zipper foot along the entire edge, leaving about 5" open at the end. Seams should be 1/2".
- Flip your shape right side out and plump up with the Poly-fil.
- Hand sew using an invisible stitch at the opening to finish.
- Pieced round pillow: Cut out the circular back piece. Diameter of the circle should be 17 1/2".
- Cut out your 10 triangular front pieces. Five for fabric #1 and 5 for fabric #2 to create the wheel effect. These pieces resemble pizza slices and they will measure 11 1/4" on each side of the pizza and have a 7" “crust" that will need to be rounded. See attached pattern piece.
- Sew two of the different colored triangles together at 5/8".
- Attach another triangle (alternate color) to the first two triangles sew.
- Repeat until you have 5 pieces sewn together. Press.
- Repeat steps 3-5 until you have the remaining 5 pieces sewn together.
- Take the two pieces you have just sewn, pin them together at the straight edge and sew them at 5/8". This will complete your front wheel piece.
- Gather approx. 56" of your pom pom trim. Pin your two circular pieces with the right sides together and sandwich your pom poms between them, facing the inside of the shape. Straight stitch the seam with your zipper foot along the entire edge, leaving about 5" open at the end. Seams should be 5/8".
- Flip your shape right side out and plump up with the Poly-fil.
- Hand sew using an invisible stitch at the opening to finish.
- Lumbar pillow: Cut out 3 pieces of fabric 13"x 17", 13"x 9" & 13"x 13".
- Create finished edge seams by folding over twice on the 13" sides of your two smaller pieces. Use your iron to help keep these folds as you sew them down. These pieces will create the envelope effect on the back.
- Putting right sides together, lay out your front piece down on your workspace followed by your medium piece (13"x 13") and then your smallest piece (13"x 9"). These two smaller pieces will be overlapped because you will be lining up everything on the outer edges. As you are doing this, sandwich in your approx. 58" of pom poms facing the inside of the shape. Straight stitch the seam with your zipper foot along the entire edge, leaving about 5" open at the end. Seams should be 1/2".
- Flip your shape right side out and plump up with the Poly-fil.
- Hand sew using an invisible stitch at the opening to finish.

- Scissors or rotary cutter

DIRECTIONS:
- Cut out your pieces based on the size pillow you are making (medium or large). Sizing is listed above.
- If you are adding cording/piping, sew all of your strips together on the short end, using the diagonal stitch method. Then wrap your strips around the cording and stitch with your zipper foot as close as you possibly can to the cording along the entire length.
- Grab all four of your side pieces and sew them together along the shorter edges to make the rectangle or square.
- Next you will be creating a fabric sandwich with your pillow top at the bottom, trim of choice in the middle and side pieces at the top. It works best to lay down the top piece on your workspace with the right side of the fabric facing you. Next place trim down along the edges of the entire square (making sure it is facing toward the inside of the square) and then placing the sides on top.
- Line up the edges of the top, trim and sides and pin around the entire perimeter to keep everything together (it will be thick).
- Use your zipper foot to sew in as closely as you can around the entire square/rectangle (approx. 1/2" in) Really make sure you are getting all those layers together and sew a nice clean, straight line.
- Now you will need to attach the bottom piece so make sure to put the right sides together, follow the same instructions as step 4, 5 & 6 creating that sandwich effect. Pin and stitch around only 3 edges. You will need an opening on the 4th side for the foam.
- Using your opening, slide the 2 foam pieces inside.
- Hand sew the opening using the invisible stitch method.
JOANN HACKS:
- If you are using the rectangular shape make sure to pay attention to where the longer & shorter sides are when you are sewing them together.
- It may be easier for you to leave more than one edge open to slide in the foam inserts. It helps to have an extra 3-5" on another side so that there is extra room.
- When you are wrapping the pom poms or cording around the shape to sew it into the pillow, it helps to snip the “seam area" a little to give it more flexibility, especially when you are doing the corners of the triangles. It will lay better as you sew.
