Beginner 1-2 Hours

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Fabric Tree A: 1/2 yds
  • Fabric Tree B: 1/2 yds
  • Pom Poms: 1 yd
  • Poly-fil®
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing Machine
  • Zipper Foot
  • Iron
  • Basic Sewing Supplies

  • MEASUREMENTS:
    • Tree A: 18"x 14"
    • Tree B: 17"x 13"

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cutting Fabric Pieces:
    • Download and print the pattern from the GET PATTERNS tab.
    • Tape paper pieces together to form tree A and tree B.
    • Cut out the paper patterns.
    • Lay two layers of tree fabric A with the right sides together and pin down pattern.
    • Cut out using fabric scissors.
    • Repeat with tree fabric B and pattern.

  2. Tree B Pom-Pom Attachment:
    • Lay out one piece of the cut out tree fabric B.
    • On the right side of the fabric line up the raw edges of the pom poms along the raw edge of the tree piece.
    • Pin the pom poms around the entire perimeter of the tree piece.
    • Clip the edges of the pom poms around corners to make it easier to bend.
    • Use a basting stitch to stitch the pom poms into place.
    • Stitch 3/8" in from the edge.
    • This will keep it in place when stitching the pillow pieces together.

  3. Constructing the Pillow:
    • For tree A line up the two pieces of pattern fabric with the right sides together and pin around the edge.
    • Use a 3/8" seam allowance to stitch around the raw edge of the entire tree except for leaving a 5" opening for turning.
    • For tree B line up the two pieces of fabric with the right sides together and pin.
    • Be mindful of the pom poms which should be inside the two pieces once sewn together.
    • Use a zipper foot to stitch around the raw edges, getting close to the poms.
    • Leave a 5" opening for turning.

  4. Finalizing the Pillows:
    • Before turning, clip the seam allowances where there are inner corners in the trees.
    • Also clip off extra seam allowance fabric from the points of the trees.
    • This makes it easier to push out the points when turning.
    • Turn both trees so the right sides of the fabric are out.
    • Stuff each with Poly-fil®.
    • Use a needle and thread to sew together the openings in both trees using an invisible stitch.

JOANN HACKS:

  • To get sharp corners in the pillows after turning, use the cap of a pen or a dull pencil to push them out from the inside.
  • Stitching layers together with pom poms can be challenging, make sure to use lots of pins to keep pieces lined up properly and make sure the pom poms are out of the way and not getting caught in stitching.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pattern missing Super cute project idea. We picked up the project sheet at the store which indicates a 1/2 yard. Directions here differ and the pattern is no help whatsoever. It's a single sheet of 8.5 x 11 pattern -- how does that make the pillow sizes indicated??
